Values

What we stand for

The University of Warwick’s principles below set out their values and expectations of how they behave as a University community, both as individuals and as an institution. They commit to sharing these principles with all new students and staff members when they arrive at Warwick and underpin their desire to give students the best experience possible whilst studying here.

They facilitate an environment where the ability to voice ideas is at its core, a place in which staff and students operate with mutual respect, with the confidence that equality of opportunity is accessible to all.

These principles represent their expectations of how we behave as a University Community, both as individuals and as an institution. They also inform their approach to taking appropriate action when these expectations are not met.

We treat everyone with respect

Everyone in their community has the right to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their status, rank, grade, belief or any protected characteristic.

Whilst they uphold freedom of expression, ensuring the right of people to express views (within the law) that are unpopular or controversial, they do not accept those views being expressed in ways which do not respect others.

We do not tolerate discrimination

They value each other’s individuality. They do not tolerate discrimination. This includes:

  • Ableism
  • Ageism
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Classism
  • Discrimination based on gender reassignment
  • Discrimination based on religion or belief
  • Discrimination relating to parental status
  • Homophobia, biphobia or discrimination based on sexual orientation
  • Misogyny
  • Racism, colourism or xenophobia
  • Sexism
  • We remove all structural or systemic barriers to equality in the University

We do not tolerate sexual misconduct, violence or abuse

  • They support anyone in their community who is subject to any form of sexual misconduct, violence or abuse.
  • They prioritise their safety and wellbeing, whilst ensuring the dignity of all those involved in any investigations or disciplinary proceedings.
  • They ensure that victims are responded to in a safe, supportive, trusting environment.
  • They listen to the voice of the victim when considering sanctions.
