About Basingstoke and Deane

The Borough of Basingstoke and Deane covers an area of over 245 square miles in northern Hampshire, bordering Surrey and the Thames Valley.

The main town of Basingstoke, where around 65% of our population live, is fast-paced, vibrant and modern, with a successful economic centre. 75% of our borough is rural, with pretty villages set in the stunning Hampshire countryside, home to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and some well-known historic houses.

We have a population of approximately 175,700 people, which is likely to exceed 200,000 in the next ten to fifteen years, with large-scale housing development underway.

The borough occupies a strategically important location in the south of England, with easy access to key transport and business hubs such as London, the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth as well as airports at Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton. Around 80,000 people work in the borough and we are home to around 7,900 businesses ranging from micro-businesses to well-known multinationals.

council plan

We have recently updated our organisation values and worked hard to ensure these were the right ones to reflect our current and future aspirations, ensuring we gathered invaluable feedback from our staff.

Our values reflect the organisation we are and want to be and set an expectation for how we work and interact with each other, our customers, and our partners.

We have guidance for our staff that sets out examples of the behaviours which would demonstrate that we are living each value and examples of behaviours which would not, as well as behaviours for those who lead and manage others. We also have a suite of activities available for managers to complete with their teams to embed the values, supporting teams to think about what the values and behaviours look, feel, and sound like in the context of their roles.

As part of our continuous improvement plans, work is being done to embed the values into all aspects of the employee journey. This will include how we recruit and induct new colleagues, and how the values fit into how we develop staff and hold appraisal conversations.
