Welcome

WELCOME FROM THE CEO, JONATHAN JOHNSON

Welcome,

I live and breathe our Trust’s vision and distinction; to succeed in 'Changing Lives Through Learning' by providing each child with an education that will give them a preparation for life that is excelled by no other. I am in no doubt that we can achieve this brave and ambitious aim with your help, your passion, and your expertise.

We welcome anyone who shares that vision and who subscribes to the multiplier effect of genuine partnership that enables continual improvement to teach children in a way that is relevant to the modern age; providing moments of awe and wonder, encouraging and enabling every child to aspire to a future that transcends the cultural and social limitations placed upon them.

We are characterised by autonomy within mutual, partnership driven principles, aims and objectives, and within them, our individual and collective determination to accept nothing less than the pinnacle of educational provision. We have a shared professional dissatisfaction, that no matter how good we become we are utterly convinced we can be even better.

Our Trust specialises in celebrating, protecting and enhancing the uniqueness of each individual school. If we’re all the same, our opportunities to learn will be limited. By remaining different, through everyone involved in our academies, rich collaboration, learning and life-long endeavours can begin.

Our highly experienced and skilled Executive Team support leaders to focus on contextual and localised leadership of curriculum, teaching, learning and the professional development and opportunities of their colleagues. Local governing boards are supported to thrive and contribute to the overall direction and decision making of our Trust.

It is a privilege to lead our Trust and the continual development, support and celebration of, hopefully, yours and our collective contributions and accomplishments. Weaving a fully inclusive, collaborative and purposeful focus on our ever-improving quality of education holds the promise of changing lives through learning; for the children and communities we serve and the adults who work with them.

I sincerely hope you will join us.

Welcome End

Having started my introduction, I am not finished (this will come as no surprise to any colleagues who know me!)…we are a bunch of disruptive thinkers and you should expect to be challenged. I am not sure any other organisation is so bold in its assertions but you need to know what you are applying for but then again we know you may get to work in a truly special place and enjoy the privilege of working with our staff and children. Yes, I am biased, but I love it. I was asked how I feel about the trust and I answered by saying every fibre of my entire being is inextricably linked to the heartbeat of the trust, every school, every member of staff and every child. I am fully emotionally invested in achieving our vision of changing lives through learning that reaches any child in any class, anywhere.

To do that I am focused on you and helping you become successful.

The key question you need to ask is whether you are made to feel that you are applying to make a difference in a trust that will focus on your growth and development. I asked one such colleague if they felt the Head Teacher had convinced them that they were genuinely interested in them as opposed to slipping in to fulfilling a job within an organisation that quickly forgot about them once the excitement of the new recruit had waned. The treadmill role.

To emphasise this further I asked… “Is the Head interested in you and why they are interviewing you? How will they help you maximise what you can offer? What is it they think you are bringing that adds to their children’s experience and how are they going to build and develop that impact? Are you merely there to fill a vacancy or to contribute to the long-term success of the children? Of course, they are going to say they want you to contribute long term. At that point, ask them how they see that happening. Ask them what their vision is and how you fit within it. How are your valuable skills recognised and how do they see all you can grow to become as part of that vision.

Why use this counterintuitive example? Simple. We do not recruit to fill a hole. We are West Lakes. We “Change Lives Through Learning.” You are important to that mission. You will, every day, be important to that mission.

As a lifelong Liverpool supporter, (my Nan knitted my first LFC hat when I was 7, complete with bobble!) one of my favourite stories about the legend that is Bill Shankly. It tells of an interview where he said he would never seek to recruit players from other [then] First Division teams like Manchester United etc., because to do so implied they were better than Liverpool and that Liverpool needed their players to make them better. He would look further afield and differently to recruit talent that would add fresh ideas and excitement, blend with, challenge the existing skills and then nurture that talent for their personal good and therefore the good of the club. I hope you can see the parallel.

I hope you are talent, joining a talented team that has you in mind, thinks about you and how it can develop you so that you are able to change lives through learning like it was you who invented it.

I do not always get it right but I try to make you feel that you are the most important person and that the team cannot do without you, that your development is crucial to the success of the children and therefore the trust. You should feel like that every day, we should make you feel like that every day, because it is true.

This is West lakes. We are West Lakes. There is nowhere like it.

About Us

West Lakes Multi-Academy Trust (WLMAT) is a Multi-Academy Trust with Sponsor Status and is a not for profit charity which sponsors primary and secondary academies. Our Sponsors, The University of Central LancashireThe Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd. have already proven their commitment and success in creating the fully inclusive, aspirational, high-achieving West Lakes Academy, firmly rooted in the local community.

We have successfully united the communities of two failing schools, learning from the experience of that strategy to understand what is required if we are asked to replicate the same social and educational transformational change elsewhere. Our vision, our distinction, is to succeed in ‘Changing Lives through Learning’ by providing an education for each child that will give them a preparation for life that is excelled by no other institution in the country. Our focus will always be on securing purposeful progress towards that distinction, having developed, and continually developing, our model for school improvement that is focussed on creating a collaborative pedagogical model to have a transformational effect on children’s life chances within very quick timescales.

If asked for support we would help schools to be outstanding places of education where expectations are that students will develop into citizens who actively contribute towards the building of cohesive and peaceful communities and are able to represent themselves confidently in all aspects of public life. By replicating the improvements seen at WLA we aim to see transformational change in other catchments, students will develop the capacity to contribute to building strong and vibrant communities.

Lake District

The Lake District

Western Lakeland is a land of vivid and exciting contrasts, lying between the mountains and the sea. The coastal towns are within minutes of complete peace and tranquility. Whitehaven is the main administrative centre for Copeland Borough Council, and Workington for Allerdale Borough Council.

There are four main valleys, each with their own distinct character, leading from the coast into the heart of the Lake District: Ennerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale and Dunnerdale. Wasdale is the home of England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike (3206 ft) and the deepest lake – Wastwater.

Towns and Villages around the Western Lakes

From Lakeland postcard villages to ancient seaports, the towns and villages of the Western Lakes wear their history and heritage in every slate and brick. Here you’ll find handsome Georgian streets, busy market centres and tiny villages strewn about the valleys, seemingly forgotten by the modernising hand of the contemporary age.
