Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to Dearham Primary School. My name is Jacqui Wilson and I have had the privilege to be Head here since January this year. Prior to this I was Head at Flimby Primary School and Eskdale St Bega’s. I have worked in education for thirty years and have seen the wheel turn many times, but through every turn my focus has been the children I have had the pleasure to work with. They are the reason I do what I do and they are the reason we are here and you are looking at this site.

Dearham is a wonderful place to work and I am excited and lucky to be part of a fabulous team. We have amazing children and a supportive community. Currently we have 260 children on roll from age 3 to 1 with a purpose built nursery. Our curriculum is designed to ensure our children have a wide range of knowledge, increasing in depth and complexity as they move through school. We want our children to be excited to learn; to be aspirational; to be caring; and to compassionate, empathetic citizens of the future. After all, they will be the adults who will look after us when are in our twilight years!

About Us

About us

Dearham Primary School is a friendly village school with children at the heart of everything we do. Here at Dearham Primary School we believe that education is a two-way process where children’s opinions and interests are valued and respected.

The interests and aspirations of our children are what drive our curriculum intent forward. We have a wonderful team of dedicated teaching staff, who work hard to ensure that every child is supported by both cherishing and challenging them to fulfil their learning potential in a safe and welcoming learning environment. Our children are polite, well-mannered and respectful of the high levels of behaviour expected at our school.

Dearham Primary School became part of West Lakes Multi Academy Trust on September 1st 2020. Children and staff benefit from the unique opportunities that being part of a Multi-Academy Trust brings. We believe opportunities such as our annual German Exchange, trips to France, links with multi-cultural schools and opportunities to express themselves through, dance, sport and song enrich our community school and provide inspiring platforms to prepare our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Our wider school community are welcomed and encouraged to be part of our Dearham School family. We have a wonderful group of parents, who fundraise for our school to provide extra play equipment, technology and funding to support school trips. We hold dear our family friendly events and parents will always be welcomed into our school.

The children, staff, governors, parents and the wider community are what make Dearham so special. I wish to welcome you to our school and invite you to see first-hand how special it is.

I was appointed as Head at Dearham Primary School in May 2021 having previously been head at another of the primaries in West Lakes Trust. My interview was rigorous and thorough and I was delighted to be offered the headship here. This is my 30th year in teaching and my 17th as a Head.

Becoming part of West Lakes Trust has offered me the opportunity to think outside the box and share my knowledge and thoughts on education, as well as be inspired by the thoughts and work of my colleagues and senior team. We have the chance to make an impact on so many children and young people and in turn the future of Cumbria. As a Head within the Trust I am driven to challenge myself and my staff to ensure we are providing the highest quality education for our children.

There is support and encouragement for every member of staff from every level in the organisation. As a Head you do not feel like you are ever standing alone in the face of difficult decisions; for example all Covid-19 statutory guidance, risk assessments, advice and information was worked on at Trust level and we knew had the full support of the Trust Board.

As a member of the West Lakes Trust team you are expected to work hard and to be dedicated to your role, but the rewards for that hard work can be seen every day in the faces of the children and young people.
