The Retrofit Challenge at a Glance

The UK has ambitious climate goals, including reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. (watch the what is domestic retrofit video!)

Improving the energy efficiency of 27 million homes is a crucial part of achieving these goals. This means that two homes every minute must be retrofitted. The Government is now investing billions of pounds over the next few years towards the decarbonisation of homes, ensuring that climate change is addressed, and the overall quality of homeowners is increased.

However, retrofitting of homes requires skills, knowledge and experience to make sure it’s done right, first time and it is estimated that the UK needs approximately 400,000 competent retrofitters to bridge the skills gap. So, now is the right time to think about embarking on a career in domestic retrofit!

Domestic retrofit refers to the process of making improvements or upgrades to an existing residential building or home to enhance its energy efficiency, comfort, safety, and overall performance.

Whole house retrofit covers a large area of practice, across both technical and administrative. And the success of major projects depends on every person having a comprehensive understanding of what it involves and what it seeks to achieve. It takes an army of professionals to deliver retrofit programmes including Retrofit Coordinators, Retrofit Assessors, Retrofit Advisors, Retrofit Designers and many more.

The demand for roles in retrofitting will only keep increasing, and it presents a significant opportunity for individuals seeking green careers. Moreover, as the urgency to address climate change grows, retrofitting will continue to be a critical field of work for reducing the environmental impact of homes.
