The legal team is overseen by Sarah Gardner – Deputy CEO and Andrew Rhodes – CEO and Commissioner. Sarah has been with the Gambling Commission since 2009 and Andrew since 2021.
The Legal Team consists of a driven team of 10 colleagues who are all committed to providing a great legal service to the Commission. We have one Paralegal, two Lawyers, one Solicitor, one Senior Solicitor, two Senior Lawyers, one Senior Barrister, one Head of Legal, and the current General Counsel.
We are also expanding and actively recruiting for 2 additional Lawyers to join our team with additional posts undergoing approval.
The team has overall responsibility for the Commission’s legal work, including a full range of in-house legal services and provision of advice to the Commission and its’ senior leaders. The departments complex and varied caseload includes administrative and public law matters, such as advice on statutory interpretation and the exercise of the Commission’s powers, regulatory law matters, gambling law, National Lottery matters, freedom of information and data protection, contract law and procurement issues and major projects.
Within our scope we also educate our colleagues and Commissioners on changes in policies and practices and on laws and regulations affecting the Commission.
