NWAS is geographically the largest NHS Ambulance Service and covers a geographical footprint of 5,400 square miles, serving a population of seven million in a combination of rural and urban communities, coastal resorts, affluent areas and some of the most deprived inner-city areas in the country. The service is commissioned by 31 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across the North West and provides a wide range of services that cover emergency and urgent care, patient transport, resilience and NHS 111 service.
Operating from 109 locations distributed across the region, the Trust has three Emergency Operations Centres for PES and a Support Centre based in Carlisle. PTS are supported by four Operations Centres in Carlisle, Preston, Chester and Manchester, whilst 111 operates from two main sites at Middlebrook in Bolton and Carlisle. The Trust employs over 6,000 staff and approximately 1,200 volunteers made up of Community First Responders and Volunteer Car Drivers. We are at the vanguard of developing the NHS 111 First programme.

NWAS handles approximately 1.23 million emergency calls, and three million patient contacts per year. Within this total activity, NWAS provides around 1.4 million patient transport journeys for patients travelling to hospitals and healthcare Centres for treatment.

Our Be Think Do leadership philosophy
We encourage all staff to embrace our Be Think Do principles because how we deliver is as important as what we achieve.
Leading in today’s world is not easy. Our world of work can be volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. At NWAS we have performance targets, quality ambitions, goals and values, and sometimes what can feel like conflicting priorities. How we lead in these environments is therefore equally important as what we do. Be Think Do helps you to reflect upon your leadership style and approach to consider what type of leader you are.
