About us
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust are the proud providers of both Hospital and Community Care to the people of the Wigan Borough and surrounding area. The Trust is also a global leader in Orthopaedics Care and undertakes some of the most complex surgeries at our renown Wrightington site.
The Trust was formed on 1 April 2001 by the merger of Wrightington Hospital NHS Trust and Wigan and Leigh Health Services NHS Trust, and became an NHS Foundation Trust in December 2008. Serving the Borough of Wigan in northwest England, WWL is dedicated to providing the best possible health care for the local population of more than 300,000 and is committed to designing services around the needs of patients and for patients to be cared for as close to their home as possible.
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust currently employ approximately 6,000 staff and annually invest over £375 million in healthcare for the patients we serve. Across the Trust we have over 750 inpatient beds. Each year over 90,000 people attend the Accident and Emergency department at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and over 40,000 people attend the Walk-In Centre at Leigh Infirmary. The Trust also delivers 500,000 outpatients appointments each year.
We have three main hospitals – The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, specialising in A&E, General Surgery, General Medicine and Maternity, Leigh Infirmary - specialising in Elderly Medicine and Outpatient Services in Leigh and Wrightington Hospital in Appley Bridge, which is an Orthapedic and rheumatology specialist. The new Othapaedic Centre will revolutionise the way we work and care for our patients.
We have a state of the art specialist Outpatient Services at the Thomas Linacre Centre which provides outpatient care to residents of the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS catchment area, with 96 Consultant led clinics per week and treating over 100,000 patients per annum. There is an Eye Unit close to the Town Centre; with other major developments including a new Fertility Unit, and Cancer Care Suite, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of providing the best possible care in the right environments for our patients.
