Winchester City Council manages a wide variety of services. With responsibility for planning, housing, waste collection, Council Tax and Business Rates collection, leisure services, tourism, benefits administration and many more services.
Your new role
As a Tax Accountant, you will be the VAT expert, responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of VAT returns. You will provide advice, guidance, and training on VAT-related matters, and support the financial service.
Completing monthly VAT returns with thorough review and backup.
Advising on VAT-related issues and conducting reviews of election to tax on properties.
Supporting quarterly VAT returns, annual outturn reports, and budgets.
Liaising with external auditors for annual accounts and audits.
Acting as a finance business partner for defined service areas, providing financial advice, analysis, and support for budget setting.
Ensuring timely delivery of year-end duties and assisting with year-end accounts.
Keeping up-to-date with Local Government accounting developments and implementing necessary changes.
What you'll need to succeed
Extensive experience working with VAT in a local government environment.
Proficiency in International Financial Reporting Standards and Local Government financial accounting.
Strong numerical analysis skills and the ability to provide clear advice and prepare succinct reports.
Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills to motivate staff and develop good working relationships with auditors.
Commitment, enthusiasm, and confidence, with a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
Proficiency in financial accounting systems, MS Excel, and MS Office.
A CCAB qualification or exceptional experience in the field.
