Mrs Rachel Sagar, Head of School

Since joining The Oldershaw School in 2022 I have seen how the school’s core values of Pride, Kindness, and Resilience are instilled by all staff daily, always upholding a pupil-centred ethos.

The school offers staff expert-led professional development to continually enhance pedagogical strategies, with various teaching and learning groups being formed to create a positive culture where the sharing of best practice is valued and encouraged.

Staff at Oldershaw are dedicated professionals, boasting knowledge and expertise within their respective subjects. They help cultivate a positive, forward-thinking workplace, aligning with the school’s vision of Excellence Together.

I have received invaluable support and guidance during my first 2 years in teaching, and continue to progress my classroom practice and beyond with the help of experienced colleagues.

Mr O Manley, Teacher of Science

Having worked at Oldershaw for 4 years, I have witnessed the recent positive change in direction, becoming a forward thinking and progressive workplace as well as rapidly expanding the support offered to all staff.

Working smart to streamline processes, remove superfluous tasks and focus on integral business functions is paramount in the culture being embedded. We aim to be a front runner in operational function processes and procedures, creating a positive impact on the teaching side of the school and ultimately, our students.

Staff wellbeing is at the forefront of daily activity; the school’s wellbeing committee offering a host of different events in line with planned termly focus areas. These events not only strongly support personal growth, but also encourage staff relationship building across business areas improving communication moving forward.

We continually strive to improve and I am proud to be a part of the school’s story.

Mr R Jones, Systems & Communications Manager, Operations

After starting employment as a Computing and IT teacher at Oldershaw in 2016, I am delighted to have been involved in the growth and transition that has taken place over recent years.

Working at Oldershaw has allowed me to develop and grow as both a teacher and a person. I have been able to develop myself through a range of CPD activities, including completing an NPQ and careers lead qualification, which has allowed me to progress to a middle leader role within the school.

We are a school which is future facing and is exploring current educational research to move the school forward and progress to better outcomes. We are a staff who bond together to instil our core values of pride, kindness, and resilience into our students.

I am extremely proud to be a member of the Oldershaw community.

Mr A Fitzgerald, Subject Leader Computing & IT

The Oldershaw School is an average sized Secondary School serving the Liscard area of Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula. Unlike most of England, The Wirral chose to keep many of its grammar schools and they remain selective, with many students in the area sitting their eleven plus examination. Additionally, there are a number of single sex and church led schools.

Although a former grammar school itself, The Oldershaw School, is proudly comprehensive, open to boys and girls of all faiths and abilities. The school’s population contains a high percentage of students who are eligible for free school meals and a larger than average number who qualify for SEN Support. Many of our students leave primary school with below average SATs scores, and some are well below their peers on entry to the school. In addition, the school operates a SEMH Base for a small number of students who are secondary age, but who still operate at a primary school level within the classroom.

Many students do well and go on to university. However, the school has in the past not always done enough to ensure that all its students reached their full potential, instead settling for second best, and that has not been good enough. A new look board of trustees, a completely new leadership team and many new additions into key positions of responsibility throughout the school are now in place to enthusiastically drive up academic performance so that all students can make strong progress regardless of their starting points, and irrespective of the challenges that they have been dealt.

We strongly believe in our students’ ability to out perform their peers from earlier years and to achieve the course or career of their choice, with confidence. We are on a mission here to rapidly improve grades and student progress, whilst providing positive learning and experiences that will stay with them as happy memories for many years to come.
