Welcome
Why be a teacher on the Isle of Man?
The Isle of Man is often celebrated as the jewel of the Irish Sea, renowned for its lush green hills, breathtaking scenery, and unique attractions. This distinctive island captivates both visitors and residents with its stunning landscapes. It boasts five inclusive mixed secondary schools: Ballakermeen High School, St Ninians High School, Castle Rushen High School, Ramsey Grammar School, and Queen Elizabeth II High School. Each school serves a specific geographical area, providing comprehensive secondary education. The island offers a picturesque setting, with each school known for its supportive and encouraging environment.
As a Crown dependency, the Isle of Man has its own parliament and legislative autonomy. Situated in the Irish Sea, it is less than 30 minutes by plane from Liverpool and 50 minutes from Ireland and Manchester. The island's airport offers regular flights to 11 destinations, including Liverpool, Manchester, London, Birmingham, Belfast, and Edinburgh. Additionally, daily ferry services connect the island to Heysham, with seasonal sailings to Liverpool and Dublin.
Despite its small size of 33 by 13 miles, the Isle of Man is rich in natural wonders, all easily accessible. The island is a sanctuary for diverse marine life, from small sea creatures to large mammals like dolphins, seals, basking sharks, porpoises, and whales. Visitors can explore marine life through sea kayaking, snorkelling, or guided boat tours.
The Isle of Man also offers a variety of delicious local foods, including fresh dairy products, homemade artisan breads, and sweet treats like ice cream, honey, and jams. The seafood is exceptional, with Manx Queenies (queen scallops) being a national delicacy.
Teachers on the Isle of Man are employed by the Department for Education, Sport, and Culture (DESC). The island has a progressive approach to teacher employment, featuring a Working Time Agreement for teachers. This ensures a balanced workload and significant financial benefits for secondary teachers. These include:
- First year Early Career Teacher’s (ECTs), are entitled to two recruitment and retention payments of £2,000 each at the beginning of your second and third full years in teaching.
- Enhanced salaries for less experienced colleagues, starting from £41,075 (MPS4, the island does not start anyone on the lower main scale teaching salaries of MPS1-3) and rising to £52,489 UPS3.
- ECTs will teach fewer lessons than more experienced teachers in their first and second year, freeing up time for CPD.
- All teachers have a working time agreement which sets out a maximum contact load per week (22.5 hours) and stipulates maximum limits for ‘collegiate’ and ‘personal’ time.

The The Isle of Man integrates all students within their local community, as there are no separate special schools or pupil referral units. This creates a unique and inclusive experience for teachers. It's an exciting time to teach on the Isle of Man, with schools having access to a diverse range of exam boards for qualifications. Unlike the UK, where Ofsted inspections are standard, schools here are evaluated externally based on a self-designed quality of education framework. The primary education system emphasises child-led learning and creativity. Additionally, schools on the Isle of Man are not ranked in league tables like in the UK; instead, student outcomes are assessed based on their destinations and exam results.
