Castle Rushen High School is a comprehensive school comprising of approximately 800 students in the 11-18 age range. It’s a great place to work! As a community school our watchwords are Care, Quality and Opportunity. This applies equally to our students and new colleagues, who are made to feel welcome and quickly become part of our school.
We serve the south of the Island, a mixed community of towns, villages and rural dwellings, and we’re situated just 5 minutes away from the airport. Despite our beautiful setting, we are a truly mixed entry school; our pupils come from different backgrounds, but we work hard so they understand that we value progress in their learning above all. Our students benefit from our comprehensive education and excellent results at KS3, GCSE and A-Level. We have a particular strength in sport, and many of our staff get involved with extra-curricular activities, regardless of their subject specialism.
Our students enjoy coming to school. They are well behaved, friendly and keen to learn. Parents and the community are known for their loyalty to the school, its staff and its students.
The school is in the midst of an exciting transformation; we are focussing on a more systematic and sustained school improvement effort around teaching and learning. Colleagues are encouraged to innovate, to see developing their craft as something that will be ongoing and regard mistakes as learning opportunities. As a result, we are strengthening the school’s capacity to make and sustain further improvements and becoming better at focussing on optimising student outcomes.
Work on our long-awaited new school building has begun. The creation of the new £30m facility starts with new playing fields adjacent to the current site. Once these are complete, work on the new building will begin. The new school will have active learning at its centre, be flexible, connected, safe, and aligned to the island’s priority for learners to be inspired by their environment. Once complete, our staff and students will enjoy the benefits of the newest state-of-the-art school on the island.
Vacancies are rare at Castle Rushen; we have many teachers who have remained here their whole career as they like it so much! Any newly qualified teachers will find this an ideal place to enter the teaching profession as we have excellent support structures in place and every subject area has colleagues with a wealth of different experiences to pass on. Part of our school ethos is to encourage new colleagues with opportunities to take up additional responsibilities to gain experience. This gives us a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere with younger colleagues regularly leading on crucial areas of school development.
We are looking for flexible and adaptable team players, with a relevant track record and a good sense of humour. Helping young people to succeed is what we are all about.
