Southend-on-Sea is a place like no other. As a key appointment in this important arena, Southend-on-Sea City Council is seeking a Director of Communities, Culture, and Tourism to shape the future of our city in line with our Southend 2050 ambition.

As part of these ambitions, we want to develop a new approach to supporting our communities and tackling health and social inequality at a neighbourhood level. By harnessing the opportunities within communities, charities and voluntary sector partners and our nationally recognised culture and arts offer we hope to empower real change.

In partnership with the Executive Director of Adult Social Care & Communities, there is signifi cant opportunity to take the lead designing and delivering a wide range of initiatives to enrich our neighbourhoods, employment, voluntary and third sector offer. Promoting opportunity to allow the city to thrive as a cultural, successful, and connected place to live and visit will benefi t everyone. We want to generate better social outcomes through increased synergy of community work and cultural programming.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing teams who create a dynamic and cohesive culture, celebrate and embed inclusion across our wonderfully diverse city, and run events that bring visitors.

With its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene, Southend presents an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to drive positive change that builds on the city’s strengths. But these are just some elements, this role will also lead on libraries, leisure, museums and well-being, all of which balance commercial development opportunities with the social needs of our communities.

Maximising income generation opportunities that align to the Council’s broader strategic objectives through the commercial development of tourism initiatives and funding partnerships will be a critical part of this role. The Director will need to deliver a cultural program that refl ects the diversity of the community and enhances the city’s reputation as a destination for the arts.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing high-performing teams that will be shaping strategy with key partners to tackle health and social inequalities, shaping the commissioning of community and statutory services. An extensive experience of strategic leadership and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders will be key.
