Welcome to Southend-on-Sea and thank you for your interest in Southend and the role of Head of Traffic & Parking. This really is an exciting time to be joining a place that is very much on the up. Southend-on-Sea is a newly designated city with a focus on creating wealth and prosperity for everyone. As one of the UK’s leading visitor destinations, we are well-known for our large tourism and visitor economy, but we are so much more than that. Our city is a great place to live, with something exciting for everyone. There are just as many opportunities for sports and leisure as there are for arts and culture.

Infrastructure & Environment has been created as part of a recent reorganisation of the Environment & Place portfolio, bringing together those functions that people are passionate about; parks, highways and waste. These functions are highly visible and therefore receive a lot of scrutiny, but only because people want these areas to succeed, bringing pride to the local area. In many ways traffic and parking is one of the most challenging of all service areas, but with challenge comes significant reward and a real opportunity to put your mark on establishing a positive, sustainable legacy for the city of Southend-on-Sea.

In the immediate term there is the opportunity to shape the service in order to maximise the great potential and dedication that exists amongst colleagues, secure a new arrangement for the management and enforcement parking across the city, review how special events that impact on the public highway are managed, put in place a clear and robust approach for fulfilling our statutory duties around highways and traffic and lead on the development of policies that maximise resources and opportunities going forward. As well has contributing to the strategic direction of the council as part of departmental and corporate leadership teams.

Succeed in all of this and you will be well placed to progress your career into a Director role as well as deriving a real sense of satisfaction from your achievements for the residents, businesses and visitors of Southend-on-Sea.
