Newcastle is one of the UK Core Cities, as well as part of the Eurocities network of European cities. It is situated on the northern bank of the River Tyne, approximately 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. In 2018, the city was declared as the best place to visit in the world by travel experts Rough Guides. Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism, and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA.

The city boasts a wide variety of cultural interest, from live music to architecture, art galleries and craft markets. It also has a strong sporting tradition and excellent travel networks, including a metro and an international airport.
