Hannah

Hannah Seaby - Head of Geography

While completing my PGCE placement at Longhill, a position became available in their Humanities department. My experience of training at the school left no doubt that it would be the perfect environment to complete my NQT year and beyond that, develop my career. As an NQT, the support offered by the Professional Tutor and my department was unparalleled and I felt part of the Longhill community from day one.

Relationships have lead me to stay here for my sixth year. Relationships with staff, parents and most importantly our students. Longhill is a supportive and inclusive community, in which everyone is valued and to which everyone can contribute. I know I am part of a proud team which is collaboratively and relentlessly working hard to improve the lives and futures of our young people. We are an energetic school with the determination to build on our strengths and achieve our vision.

The professional development of all staff is a key focus at Longhill with everyone having control over their CPD and targets. My career has benefitted from numerous opportunities which have developed my practice and allowed me to progress from an NQT, to Second in Opening Minds and my position today. There are endless examples of staff who have been encouraged to take on new responsibilities and develop their career. Hard work and strengths are recognised at Longhill. My successes have been acknowledged by my line managers and rewarded through promotions and performance related pay progression. My areas for development have been addressed with the use of expertise from within our school and the city.

Longhill is a fantastic place to work and joining our community is a challenge that you will not regret!

John Bliss - Second in charge of English

Longhill is a great place to teach. Students are proud of their school and keen to do well. I love the work I do and know that those around me feel the same way. We are a truly supportive bunch and make sure staff both old and new are supported, listened to and happy.

Teachers pull together to do the very best we can for our students and are rewarded with a great working atmosphere and the chance to make a real difference to our students' lives. Senior staff here at Longhill are approachable and keen to listen and to act on teachers' ideas and efforts. Since my appointment last year I have never looked back. I have thoroughly enjoyed my teaching, working in a fantastic department and being part of a great team across the school.

Rachel George - SENCO

I've always found Longhill a vibrant and energising place to work, I've chosen to stay at Longhill for a number of reasons. The staff are a truly dedicated and talented bunch, always willing to go the extra mile. The students are engaging, interesting and quirky. We truly epitomise the Brighton ideal of embracing individuality. You'll never be bored!

I've been proud to work with young people here who set the bar high in terms of their determination to overcome a wide range of challenges. Being SENCO means I get to work across departments and across Key stages. You could say I get to see 'the whole Longhill'- and it's a place I truly love. Yes we have challenges but emotional intelligence isn't one of them. Seeing staff embrace adaptations to help truly vulnerable learners makes me proud to work here. Seeing the progress our students make, no matter their starting point is something I am glad to be a part of.

In terms of support, there is always someone you can go to here. I'm immensely lucky that my own department of Learning Support is made up of some of the kindest, most talented and supportive individuals. Together, we make a difference and we know we are stronger united.

In terms of helping others, I'm proud to play my part, running training for staff so we can learn to embrace new challenges together in an environment of trust and I'm both supported and challenged to keep improving my own skills.

If you know yourself and you want to share what you're great at whilst growing the skills that need work there's no better place to be. It won't be easy but it will be rewarding, entertaining and above all, fulfilling. Don't just take my word for it- come on one of our tours of the school. People say there's a magical atmosphere here; that it's somewhere that just feels 'right'. Come and see if you agree.

Testimonials

September 2016 - Parent

I am a mum of four children and my eldest son is now in Yr 9 at Longhill. During his time so far, he feels safe, is well cared for, has great opportunities in all areas, enjoys his lessons, likes ‘most’ of his teachers and is very happy at school and was in fact keen to get back this week.

I feel that Longhill is a fantastic school, and by far shone through above the other schools I visited at open evenings across Brighton. The pupils were welcoming, informative and prospective pupils were shown around and got real hands on feel for the school.

At Longhill I do feel like they really care, as any little problems or queries I’ve had have always been dealt with efficiently by kind, caring and committed members of staff. All the staff from office staff to teachers, heads of years to head teachers is very approachable and will always listen.

Longhill is a great school which has amazing facilities, is well looked after and my son is progressing well even though he is definitely not naturally academic and more sporty (which is lucky as Longhill has given him so many opportunities to take part in various different sporting events throughout his time there).

Providing the parents work WITH the school and not AGAINST I am convinced that any child would do well and enjoy Longhill, but people need to understand that its teamwork between the school and parents/carers as no school in the country can be expected to do all the work, it’s got to be a partnership which I believe is what Longhill offers.

My daughter has just started in Yr 7 at Longhill and has nothing to say but positive things, and can’t wait to get to school in the morning. All I can say is so far so good and that I am excited for her to be a pupil at Longhill and the opportunities she’ll have.
