We have just begun a new Metro Mayoral term, appointed a new Chief Executive and published our strategic plan, which provides the roadmap for delivery.

Spanning six local authority areas, the Liverpool City Region is an exceptional place, with huge strengths, even greater potential, and vibrant communities.

Over the last decade, the City Region has consolidated its reputation as a world-wide visitor destination of choice. Before the pandemic, our 3.5% growth was much higher than the national average and we were the most productive city region in the North.

Home to two Premier League football clubs, the Grand National and a fantastic Philharmonic Orchestra, the region has a wealth of amazing cultural assets fuelling our £5 billion annual culture and visitor economy.

We’ve seen our universities, already sector leading in aspects of their research and development, act as major investors. We have developed a fast-growing social economy and reduced our unemployment rate from well above, to just below, the national level.

Plans are in place to harness the internationally recognised strengths in key areas like material science, infectious diseases control and high-performance computing, with many opportunities to become world leaders in these fields.

We have ambitious plans to reach net zero carbon by 2040, ten years ahead of the national target, and green growth schemes, such as our Mersey Tidal Power project, will drive our economic recovery.

We know that we still need to tackle longstanding and deep-seated socio-economic challenges that can hold our economy back. Prosperity across the City Region and our diverse communities is still distributed too unevenly. We are determined to address these inequalities and build opportunity for all our residents.

The pandemic has brought further challenges, but we remain hugely ambitious for our economic recovery and are laser-focused on achieving our vision.
