Hill House School has a long history and promises an exciting future. Established in 1912, the school merged with St Mary’s School in 2002 and became its current incarnation in 2008 when it moved to its present site at Auckley, near Doncaster.

In recent years, the school has continued to expand by adding a new Sixth Form and Music School, as well as a state of the art Astroturf sports pitch.

At the Independent School Awards, Hill House School was named ‘Independent School of Year’ in 2012.

Our notable former pupils include:

  • Jeremy Clarkson, Television Journalist
  • Emma Chambers, Actress
  • Rosie Winterton, Member of Parliament
  • Richard Dawson, England cricketer & Gloucestershire County Cricket Club Head Coach
  • Michael Hills, Rugby player (England U21 + 7s: Sale, London Welsh and Doncaster)
  • Jonathan Wood, Doncaster Councillor 2008 to present

Our school is divided into three age groups: Junior School (EYFS, KS1 and KS2), Senior School (Year 7 to 11) and Sixth Form.

Junior School

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, there is a steady transition from play-centred to more structured learning. Pupils are encouraged to develop key skills such as concentration and self-discipline, but there is also time to enjoy the many opportunities for sport, music, and the creative arts. Happy, lively classes have caring staff who are able to nurture children as individuals and cater for difference stages of development.

In Key Stage 2, Mathematics, English and Science are key subjects, but pupils use these strong foundations to build with success in new areas such as Information Technology and a number of Modern Languages.

Specialist teaching plays a large part in the Junior School, in areas such as languages, sport, music, drama, art and sciences, as children prepare for an easy transition to the Senior School.

Senior School

In Years 7 and 8, pupils enjoy expert teaching and a broad yet challenging curriculum, allowing them to discover the joys of more mature study and the importance of having high expectations of themselves. The curriculum is a successful blend of the traditional and the innovative. In addition to the core subjects, students study Modern Foreign Languages, Latin, a range of Humanities, technological subjects such as Computing and ICT, and creative subjects such as Music and Art.

At GCSE, pupils choose optional subjects to go alongside their continued study of English, Mathematics, Science and Languages. These include subjects such as Computing, Sports Science, Drama, Business Studies and Philosophy and Ethics. Most pupils take 9 or 10 GCSEs at the end of Year 11.

Sixth Form

In the Sixth Form, students enjoy small classes in our stunning Sixth Form Centre, which includes classrooms and seminar rooms, designated study space, a large open plan Common Room and a very popular coffee shop. The school currently offers 22 A level subjects.

The Hill House Baccalaureate includes opportunities for members of the Sixth Form to develop the skills of leadership, teamwork, service and research skills through the Extended Project Qualification. In addition to expert guidance for university entrance, Sixth Formers also undertake high quality internships at local business or services to help prepare fully for the world of work.
