Group Financial Controller
Opportunity
The Role
The Group Financial Controller will provide sound financial expertise and advice, supporting the development of a high-performance culture across a large finance team and assist in the delivery of strategy across the business.
The role will focus on the following key responsibilities:
Assisting with Strategy
- Work with the Directors and Boards to deliver on agreed strategies.
- Provide financial direction across companies within the Group which supports their strategies.
- Work with Group Finance Director and CFO to maximise ROCE and use of Shareholder Funds.
- Lead Net Profitability projects in line with Business Strategies.
Financial Leadership
- Assume overall leadership of the Group’s accounting function.
- Provide financial planning and related ongoing advice to the Directors, Boards, and Senior Managers.
- Drive the budgetary process across the Group, with direction provided by GFD.
- Oversee all activities in preparation of financial and management accounts across the Group, including ownership of consolidation process.
- Develop management and user-defined reports which support robust budgetary cost control.
- Control all financial transactions and accountancy matters within the Operating Companies, including Audit Systems.
- Direct the ongoing development and implementation of robust systems of financial and associated internal controls which safeguard the assets of the Group.
- Lead Audit processes across the Group.
- Prepare the annual financial statements, including directors’ report and strategic report, in conjunction with external advisors.
- Develop and implement appropriate Finance systems and processes.
- Lead the process for improving the efficiency of Finance and operational work streams.
- Lead the development of a group financial planning & analysis (FP&A) function, including the implementation of the new group planning tool (Planful).
- Lead the provision of a Retail Accounts Service to Independent Retailers.
- Lead the services of the Payroll Bureau, including PAYE, Pensions, Regulatory Compliance and Expenses.
- Oversee compliance of financial affairs across the Group in relation to relevant statutory bodies.
- Lead tax planning for the Group, including liaison with Tax Advisors as appropriate.
- Lead negotiation and renewal of best possible insurance contracts across the Group.
- Review and provide analysis of SPAR Central Office Accounts and Budgets.
Relevant Experience/ Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this role will be a qualified member of an accountancy body, or holder of an equivalent qualification, with a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience.
In particular, we are looking for someone with demonstrable experience of successfully leading a large Finance Function / team of qualified professionals. The ability to operate at Strategic and Operational levels will be essential in this role.

A current valid full driving licence is also a requirement of the role.
Whilst not essential, the following relevant experience/ knowledge would also be advantageous/ desirable:
- Experience of leading a Finance team within the FMCG sector
- Experience of working within the food sector.
- Strong track record in leading acquisition and disposal projects.
