About us

Gloucester City Council

The Council is located in the heart of the County Town, historically known as the 'Crossroads of England' since its establishment by the Romans, the City has many fine buildings some going back to medieval times but in recent years an urban renaissance enabled by over £800m in major regeneration projects has created considerable interest in the City itself as a place to visit and live. An increasingly popular destination, Gloucester is very much a city on the up.

Gloucester Docks started the regeneration of the City and is now host to regular festivals which attract visitors from all over the country, our most popular events; The Tall Ships and Victorian Market can attract over 200k visitors to the City. The Cathedral is one of the finest in the country, the resting place of Kings, it hosts the 3 Choirs Festival. There are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants and a full year-round program of events which make it a very vibrant place. The Council are currently on-site with a £7m scheme to create a performance space in Kings Square in the heart of the City, which will be the focus for regular arts and entertainment events.

Home to the Cherry and Whites our internationally renowned Gloucester Rugby Club, Gloucester boasts a fine sporting tradition, also promoting clubs and sports facilities for just about any other sport you can think of including dry slope skiing. As a local authority, we both support, own and are assisting with the development of sports facilities right across Gloucester. The City has a reputation for excellent educational standards with a number of very good state and public schools.

Easily accessible from the M5, Gloucester lies around an hour away from Bristol and Birmingham and under two hours away from London.  There are excellent transport links by rail and road to the City. As this historic town borders the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean it offers an excellent base from which to explore the area too.

We are an ambitious authority and Gloucester City Council is at the forefront of this regeneration and has over £100m in development schemes underway. We already have a varied and important property portfolio based in the City that is an important part of securing the finances of the Council to deliver existing services and furthering the regeneration in the City of Gloucester.

Gloucester City Council sits on the top floor of newly refurbished offices with fine views across the City, being a stone’s through away from the main attractions and easy walking distance from most of our buildings. The Council carries out a variety of district council functions. We own a portfolio of commercial property which has expanded considerably in recent years with targeted investment in the City and the regeneration. We have transferred our housing stock and we now manage a wide range of buildings held for operational, investment and regeneration purposes. We are the major city landowner and manage properties ranging from mediaeval to brand new state of the art buildings.

We are looking to enlarge our team and create a professional resource to deal with the increased workload resulting from the growth of our portfolio. This presents a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicants to influence and have a significant impact in the delivery of the Council’s plans to both support its services and contribute to the renaissance of the City.

These are exciting times for Gloucester we are embarked on a journey that will transform the City so don’t pass the opportunity to be part it.
