Working for the Council

Gloucester City Council offer staff a very generous package of benefits including the following;

Flexible Working

Gloucester City Council encourages all employees to have a good work-life balance, and they are proud to offer a wide range of flexible working options including:

  • • Flexi-time
  • • Flexible working policy including options such as Part-Time, Compressed Hours, Job-sharing and Term-Time Contracts
  • • Remote working from home
  • • Relaxed dress code
  • • All employees are supplied with a laptop and they’ve embraced agile working practices – empowering you to choose where, how, and when you work wherever possible.

Excellent Working Environment:

The Council has recently moved office to share Gloucestershire County Council’s Shire Hall building on Westgate Street, Gloucester. The new top floor office is a modern, light and airy space inspiring new ways of working. Teams have embraced more efficient working practices and are integrated into the open-plan office.

They also have some of the best views of the city from their top floor offices, in the heart of Gloucester, including views of the docks, Gloucester Cathedral, and a local nature reserve.

The working environment includes:

  • • Bright, modern, airy open plan offices
  • • Upgraded IT hardware including Skype, to enable agile and flexible working
  • • New desks, chairs and office furniture
  • • Breakout areas for meetings
  • • Two café areas shared with the county council, to increase and improve partnership working
  • • New kitchen facilities

The newly refurbished buildings have reduced the carbon footprint and energy bills by incorporating solar panels into the roof and cladding – providing enough electricity to light the whole of Shire Hall.

Not everyone will be in their main office. As they are passionate about arts and culture they have a number of different venues in the city centre, as well as other community-based services.

Annual Leave

The amount of Annual Leave you get depends on the grade of your job, but it will be at least 32 days holiday (including 8 statutory bank holidays). You will also have the option to ‘buy’ up to an extra 10 days holiday (pro-rata for part-time staff). You can also take up to 2 days paid leave every year to volunteer on a range of local projects helping the city of Gloucester.

They also offer extra time off for parents including:

  • • Enhanced Maternity and Paternity pay
  • • Enhanced shared parental pay
  • • Paid compassionate leave as an extension to maternity leave where a baby is born prematurely, as part of the national ‘Smallest Things’ charity campaign

Health, Wellbeing and Support

Having healthy, happy staff is a priority for Gloucester City Council, you will be offered:

  • • A reduced rate for staff at GL1 Leisure and Fitness
  • • the ability to purchase bikes through Cyclescheme, saving 25-39% on bikes and accessories
  • • A dedicated, inclusive Employee Assistance Programme offering 24-hour telephone and online advice, support, guidance and counselling on a wide range of issues

Pension Benefits

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is one of the largest public sector pension schemes in the UK.

It’s related to your salary and is not affected by stock market changes or performance of investments. Your contribution rate will vary depending on your pay, between 5.5% and 12.5%. The council will pay the cost of providing the pension, after taking into account investment returns – they generally pay in two thirds and you contribute one third.

You’ll also get life cover of three times your salary, along with financial protection for your family.

Other Benefits and Discounts

The council also offers other discounts and benefits such as:

  • • A wide range of discounts on visitor attractions, short breaks, experiences and discounted purchases on a range of gift vouchers
  • • Reduced rates for public transport season tickets
  • • Regular staff social events and health and wellbeing events
  • • Discounts on buying bikes and cycling equipment through Halfords, Cyclesolutions and 50 cycles
