An insight to Croydon

Croydon has the largest and youngest population of any London Borough. We believe this youth and diversity gives Croydon an energy and excitement not found in any other London Borough.

Croydon is home to a rich local music scene, with many music stores and venues as well as the nationally renowned BRIT school nurturing creative young talent. Past alumni include Adele, Tom Holland and Katie Meula.

Students regularly feature at various events throughout the borough and wider capital with local boy Stormzy and former BRIT student recently performing at a surprise event at Boxpark to pay tribute to his home town.

The borough also hosts a number of colourful festivals; Croydon PrideFest, the Mela, and the Ends Festival that bring the different communities together.

You will be working in a town centre that is strongly culturally diverse; home to a wide variety of street art to lift the spirits and create that edgy, vibrant feel Croydon is known for.

Banksy recently chose Croydon to create a pop-up shop, attracting massive local and international media attention and visitors from all over the world. Croydon is also regularly showcased in Hollywood with films such as Da Vinci Code, Brazil, Jason Bourne, Batman, The Long Walk and TV series Black Mirror all using Croydon filming locations. Last but not least Croydon has its own premiership football club – Crystal Palace. If you are lucky you might see Wilf Zaha in his Lamborghini popping to the shops.

Croydon’s town centre is undergoing a new renaissance, with cranes on the skyline and colourful hoardings erected.

Planning consent has been granted for a new Westfield shopping centre and the celebrated 1960’s Fairfield Halls recently reopening following major refurbishment to provide a cultural hub for local, national and international performers.

A new civic square, procured through an international design competition and currently in design development, will complement this cultural offer, bringing water, artistic lighting and landscaping to create a new venue for lifestyle and performance activities.

This will supplement the adjacent historic Queens Gardens and build upon the wider public realm strategy that has helped rebrand the town as a walkable and livable destination.

East and West Croydon stations provide excellent rail links to the centre of London, which is only 15 minutes away with many frequent services and travelling southwards there is also excellent rail and road access to Gatwick and Brighton. Both East and West Croydon stations are interchanges with connections to the tram and buses for more local travel. The Council is working with Network Rail and Transport for London on redevelopment proposals for our stations that will provide new opportunities for growth, regeneration and investment.

But Croydon is not all about the modern and new, we have a wealth of heritage and listed buildings that need to be retained and cherished. These create interesting challenges for Built Environment professionals to ensure safe and fit for purpose environments, whilst retaining historic integrity.

If you enjoy local history you can shop at the ancient Surrey Street market and peek into the 400 year old Whitgift almshouse on the corner of the High Street.

The wider borough brings plenty of contrasts, with many local centres all with their own identities, set within varied residential suburbs. Significant development activity is taking place throughout, with intensification, conversions and extensions bringing evolution and change. Croydon is also one of the greenest boroughs in London, boasting over 120 parks, one of which has its own sailing club. From our modern, air conditioned offices you will have a bird eye view of all the construction activity including our very own “South Bank Centre’’ of Fairfield Halls.

You will be able to stroll there at lunch time, have a coffee and enjoy some of the free events in the foyer. After work you can go for dinner in our South End restaurant quarter or enjoy an evening’s entertainment at Boxpark (one of only two in London).

People come to Croydon and are captured by its attitude and buzz, we think it’s a great place with a fantastic working environment, why don’t you get in touch to find out more?
