About Basingstoke and Deane

The Borough of Basingstoke and Deane covers an area of over 245 square miles in northern Hampshire, bordering Surrey and the Thames Valley.

The main town of Basingstoke, where around 65% of our population live, is fast-paced, vibrant and modern, with a successful economic centre. 75% of our borough is rural, with pretty villages set in the stunning Hampshire countryside, home to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and some well-known historic houses.

We have a population of approximately 175,700 people, which is likely to exceed 200,000 in the next ten to fifteen years, with large-scale housing development underway.

The borough occupies a strategically important location in the south of England, with easy access to key transport and business hubs such as London, the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth as well as airports at Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton. Around 80,000 people work in the borough and we are home to around 7,900 businesses ranging from micro-businesses to well-known multinationals.

Our Council Plan sets an ambitious agenda to 2024 and beyond, the focus being to put residents at the heart of everything we do, providing our communities with the best possible place to live, work and enjoy their leisure time. This plan is informed by the findings of the Horizon 2050 vision for the future of Basingstoke and Deane, ensuring that the council delivers a future that residents, businesses and organisations have told us that they want to see.

Our priorities are:

• To plan for the future.

Alongside this, in September 2019 the council agreed that action must be taken to work towards making Basingstoke and Deane a carbon-neutral borough by 2030. And we’re leading by example by setting ourselves a target to deliver services to our residents in a more environmentally-friendly way and become carbon neutral by 2025.
