Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the post of Headteacher at the Avenue Centre for Education.

It is an honour to be the Chair of the Management Committee in a school that is inclusive and friendly. The opportunity to be involved in a school where pupils value the care and support provided and, welcome the ‘second chance’ the school gives them at education is amazing. We play a significant role in supporting the most vulnerable in society.

Ofsted awarded a grading of ‘Good’ to the Avenue Centre for Education at our last inspection. There were many positive key findings:

  • The Headteacher and his team of senior leaders play a strategic role in ensuring that pupils who are permanently excluded are placed in suitable provision to help them reengage in learning.
  • Excellent relations between pupils and staff, and small classes enable pupils to make good progress. They benefit greatly from one-to-one teaching and support in lessons.
  • Behaviour is well managed. Staff get to know the personal backgrounds of every pupil. They work with them, and their parents and carers, to ensure that their needs are fully met.
  • Most pupils in key stage 3 attending the school’s short-stay provision, the ‘revolving door’, make good progress and return to mainstream schools.
  • Pupils in ‘extended provision’ in key stage 4 gain a range of GCSE and vocational qualifications. Over the last three years, all Year 11 pupils have progressed onto placements at local colleges or other providers.
  • Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good.
  • Parents and carers really appreciate what the school does for pupils.

We are now looking for an inspirational new leader to bring a long-term vision to the school and continue the journey to being an outstanding alternative education provider in Luton.

The Centre has undergone significant building and refurbishment works and we have premises to equip ourselves in our current role to provide PRU and SEMH provision for children with complex needs. We now seek a dynamic leader with experience, high expectations and inspirational qualities to join us at this exciting time, to build upon the good work that is already in place and work with our dedicated and experienced staff to deliver outstanding outcomes.

We would be delighted for you to visit and that can be arranged through our recruitment advisor, Martin Blair at Hays Leadership (T: 07736791138, E: martin.blair@hays.com) who is also available for an informal conversation about the role or to discuss making an application.

Thank you again for your interest. If you truly feel you can make a difference, we very much look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

Lawrence Patterson
