About Mole Valley
Mole Valley lies at the heart of Surrey, mid-way between London and the Sussex coast. It takes its name from the River Mole, which runs the length of the district. Mole Valley covers a hundred square miles, and has a population of about 86,000 people.
Around 72% of the district’s population lives in the towns of Dorking and Leatherhead, and the villages of Bookham, Fetcham and Ashtead.
Over 90% of the district is countryside, and much of it sits within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The North Downs run across the middle of the district and include Box Hill, a popular visitor spot. To the south lies Leith Hill, the highest point in Surrey. Dare you climb Leith Hill tower?
Dorking: an historic market town nestling in the Surrey Hills
Set against the North Downs, Dorking lies at the centre of the district. It has an array of independent shops and places to eat.
Visitors come to walk the Deepdene Trail, explore the town’s famous antique shops, underground caves, museum, nearby vineyard and award-winning giant cockerel sculpture!
Recently opened in Dorking is Meadowbank Community Football Ground. Visitors can enjoy a 3G pitch, floodlights, stands, clubhouse, changing room, soft play, café – the facilities are a fantastic addition to the already very popular park and children’s playground. The development is home Surrey FA and Dorking Wanderers FC.

- Dorking and nearby Box Hill were chosen as part of the 2012 London Olympics cycling road race
- Eccentric Major Peter Labellier is buried upside down on Box Hill, supposedly because ‘the world was topsy-turvey, he would thus be right at last’
- Denbies, just outside Dorking on the A24, is the largest vineyard in England
- Abinger Common (five miles from Dorking) is the oldest village in England with dwellings dating back 7,000 years

Leatherhead is in the north of the district. It has easy access to Junction 9 of the M25 and good rail services to London. The town is home to many national and international companies such as Exxon Mobil and Unilever and provides a range of services and facilities to the community.
To the east and west of Leatherhead are the villages of Ashtead, Fetcham and Bookham. Each has a strong sense of community, good local facilities and popular green spaces.
