Staff profiles

Ewan Murray, English NQT
Tom Stevens profile image

I joined York High last school year as an ITT and have gone on to be employed as an NQT in English. Since coming to the school I have felt welcomed by the staff and the pupils once I had established that I was willing to work hard in my role at the school. My role as a teacher has its challenges but all are worthwhile as the students develop in confidence and knowledge in the subject. There is a real sense of community within the school which is apparent from all staff and the students alike. I am enjoying all aspects of the role that I have at the school and believe it is a great place to work and to be involved in.

Joe Bower, Teacher of Religious Studies

York High School is a relatively small and inclusive community school, meaning that it is very easy to form relationships with the pupils. In turn, this means that there is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the young people in the local area.

Staff at York High School are extremely friendly and there is a real sense of camaraderie across the school, with everyone working together to improve teaching and learning, and aiming to provide pupils with the best opportunities possible.

I would strongly recommend York High School to anyone who is looking to work within a community environment, as part of a team with common goals and as a place actively seeking to improve the futures of young people.

Claire Smith, Pupil Admin Assistant
Claire Smith profile image

My role at York High School is Pupil Receptionist and I work within the Pastoral Office. I am a point of contact for the pupils and I am available to help them with situations such as illness, first aid, forgotten PE kits or uniform/homework/cooking ingredients/lunch money/phone calls home and also offer a shoulder to cry on. I am also responsible for administering medication to pupils, maintaining healthcare plans for particular pupils and arranging school photos and vaccinations. I provide admin support for subject teachers and I am also part of the wider admin team.

I enjoy working at York High because I love to see the pupils progress and achieve. Being born and raised in the local area, I can understand some of the challenges certain pupils have and helping them overcome these is a brilliant part of my job.

In my personal view, I work with a brilliant supportive team. We can rely on each other and I know I have the backing off my colleagues. We have fun whilst still providing the support to the pupils and making their time at York High enjoyable and worthwhile.

Vicky Mayhew, Teaching Assistant
Vicky Mayhew profile image

My name is Vicky Mayhew and I work at York High as teaching assistant supporting students with a wide range of SEN needs. I also have a son in year 11 and so I have seen the school from both the perspectives as a parent and a member of staff.

Firstly as a parent all I can tell you is that my son has thrived at York High. He has grown in confidence and his education has always been first class. I often wondered how they got him to this point, he started off very shy. Now that I have worked in the school it is clear to see that his new found confidence has grown due to the care and diligence each member of staff puts into the pupils at York high.

As a new member of the team I can now contribute to students having a positive experience at school. Whether they need support academically, socially or emotionally I continue to do my best to meet their individual needs. Over the past year no two days have ever been the same so if you are looking a job that will be both challenging and rewarding in equal measure whilst working within a friendly and supportive team York high is a great place to be.

Steve Hardy, Learning Leader Foundation Team

I started teaching in this community 13 years ago and I have been part of York High School since its inception. I started as a classroom teacher of History and RE. My current role is the Learning Leader for Foundation Subjects in which I am responsible for History, Geography, MFL, RE and Personal Development (PSHE). The reason I have stayed here for the whole of my career are many and varied however the main one is clearly the pupils. I am a passionate believer that every child deserves a first class education regardless of their postcode.

This school is truly comprehensive and inclusive, offering a fantastic opportunity to every child living in its catchment. The range of learners is as broad as imaginable, no two classes are the same and it is never dull. Our pupils give you instant feedback, if you care and are delivering good lessons they are fantastic and demonstrate great loyalty. However if you offer up the opposite you will be the first to know. You are never left wondering how your lessons went at York High. If you are good you will be successful here and you will have excellent opportunities to progress as the school firmly believes in promoting from within.

Aside from the pupils the other thing that keeps me here is the staff. We have a hugely talented and committed team who always put the pupils first. Many of the staff have been here a long time. The level of professional and personal support I have received over the years is phenomenal and to which I owe a huge debt of gratitude. You will never feel alone at York High and there is always someone who has the solution to your problem. So, if you want a challenge that demands talent and offers huge rewards then this is the place for you.

I am a Professional Tutor at York High School. My role involves working with training providers and universities to ensure that ITT’s are catered for in school through supporting their subject mentors and providing CPD and key meetings with specific members of staff.

I also work with NQT’s to ensure that their continual professional development is met. This includes observations, individual interventions and writing their NQT reports for CYC. In this role I work closely with the Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning, subject mentors and heads of department.
