About us

Helen Godwin is the new Mayor of the West of England, after being duly elected in the election on 1 May 2025.

The Mayoral Combined Authority was set up in 2017 to make decisions and investments that benefit people living and working in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire.

Together, our aim is to deliver economic growth for the region and address some of our challenges, such as productivity and skills, housing and transport.

Our vision

Our vision

Our vision is for the West of England to have a world-renowned green economy, creating new jobs for residents. We will address housing inequalities providing residents access to good homes, opportunities, and services. Our ambitions are for a region that will be more prosperous, with a healthier and happier population driving the region’s success.

There is a great deal to accomplish in achieving our vision for 2040. With long-term flexible funding, greater devolved powers, and strong local, national, and international partnerships, we are confident in our future and our ability to deliver for the region by attracting new investment and jobs. With Temple Quarter and Brabazon named by the Government for ‘new town’ designation, the West of England is home to two of the country’s largest regeneration projects, worth billions of pounds to the regional economy.

To realise our vision, our priorities are:

  • Creating a better-connected region, working towards a world-class transport system
  • Delivering net zero and nature recovery
  • Creating the jobs and training the region needs, now and in the future
  • Supporting sustainable communities that people are proud to call home
  • Putting the West of England on the map for national and global success

Our bright, modern office is just a walk from Bristol Temple Meads station,
surrounded by a variety of cafes, parks and shops.

Discover the West of England: Where innovation meets inspiration

The West of England — Bath & North-East Somerset, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire — is a region where heritage and ambition come together to shape the future.

Innovation and industry

From the pioneering spirit of Brunel to the global legacy of Concorde, this is a place built on bold ideas and engineering excellence. Today, that legacy continues through world-leading industries in aerospace, green energy, and advanced digital technologies. Our innovators are decarbonising flight, developing next-generation AI, and driving the transition to a sustainable future. Our region is brimming with creative, commercial potential with a compelling case for further investment.

Creative and cultural excellence

Innovation here isn’t confined to labs and factories — it’s woven into the cultural fabric of the region. As the birthplace of Aardman Animations and home to the UK’s largest production company outside London, the West of England is a creative powerhouse. From film and TV to gaming, design, and immersive media, our creative industries are thriving — supported by a vibrant cultural scene of festivals, music, and performance.

Education and economic strength

This is also one of the UK’s most dynamic places to live, work, and study. With four world-class universities and a bourgeoning student population, we’re a magnet for talent and ideas. Our workforce is among the most highly qualified in the country, and our economy consistently outperforms the national average. High employment, strong business growth, and a collaborative spirit make this a region full of opportunity.

Sustainability and quality of life

The West of England is growing — fast. Our population is expected to rise by 11%, drawn by the region’s outstanding quality of life. We’ve set ambitious, long-term targets to make 30% of our land protected for nature & biodiversity, so everyone can enjoy access to stunning green spaces, from the rolling hills of the Mendips to the parks and waterways of our cities. Our commitment to sustainability is clear, with modernised rail stations, active travel routes, and bold plans to reach net zero.

Attractions and global appeal

We’re also a place of global appeal. Iconic attractions like the Roman Baths, Clifton Suspension Bridge, and the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta draw millions of visitors each year. Our sporting achievements, from Premiership rugby to Olympic athletes, add to the region’s energy and pride.

Challenges and future vision

Of course, we face challenges — from tackling inequality to accelerating climate action. But we’re not standing still. The West of England is taking bold steps to build a greener, fairer, and more inclusive future. Whether you're an investor, entrepreneur, student, or skilled professional, the West of England offers the space, support, and inspiration to thrive.
