DE&I resources

Our survey findings show that 42% of organisations have a dedicated DE&I resource. Of these, half (50%) have a DE&I team, 34% have just a DE&I manager and 31% have just a Head of DE&I or Chief Diversity Officer.

Those within the public sector (53%) are more likely than those in the private sector (34%) to have a dedicated DE&I resource. Organisations located in London are also the most likely to have DE&I resources in place (47%), as well as those working within the education industry (52%).

Despite a growing need for more DE&I representation and resources, 42% of employers said their organisation does not have a dedicated DE&I resource, of whom 68% stated they do not plan on hiring or working with an external DE&I resource in the next year.

There is still a small proportion of organisations that are taking steps to help increase their DE&I resources. 2% plan to hire a DE&I resource internally, while 6% plan to hire externally in the next 12 months, highlighting the importance of dedicated DE&I resources, albeit a small amount.

If you don’t already have a DE&I resource, is your organisation planning on hiring or working with a DE&I resource over the coming 12 months?

Capturing diversity data

Having diversity data, such as demographic information, is a crucial step towards understanding and improving diversity within your own workforce. Our survey reveals that just under half (49%) of organisations are now capturing this data, a 10% increase from 2019 (39%), showing a growing commitment to transparency and informed decision-making around DE&I.

However, 18% of organisations do not capture this data, decreasing from 40% in 2019. This highlights a significant opportunity for organisations to enhance their DE&I strategies by implementing robust data collection practices to help better understand their employees needs and wants when it comes to DE&I.

The benefits of capturing demographic diversity data during the application process is being understood, with 71% of respondents believing it has a positive impact on attracting new and diverse talent. This is especially pronounced for those with black heritage (83%) or Asian heritage (82%). Only a small fraction of employees overall (5%) view capturing this data negatively, underscoring the importance of doing so when recruiting.

In the last five years, this proportion has increased, from less than half (47%) of employees who felt capturing diversity data had a positive impact on attracting new and diverse talent, and 41% who believed it had no impact. A further 12% thought capturing diversity data had a negative impact on attracting diverse talent in 2019. Interestingly, 72% of employees who do not identify as disabled felt capturing this data has a more positive effect on hiring diverse employees than those with a disability (67%). This sentiment also extends to those who identify as neurodivergent, as 68% felt this was a positive move compared to a higher proportion of those who are not neurodivergent (73%).

Employees are also more confident that the diversity data that is captured by their organisation is effectively used to inform their candidate attraction strategy, with 68% stating so. This has increased over the last five years, as only 43% of employees felt confident in 2019.

Frame your DE&I policies correctly

Another key area highlighted in our findings is the importance of publicising DE&I policies when it comes to attracting talent. 61% of respondents say they actively look for an organisation’s DE&I policy when researching a potential employer. Those with an Asian heritage (81%), black heritage (76%) or a mixed/multiple ethnic background (74%) are all more likely to search for this information, as are those with a disability (69%) with slightly less of those from a White background looking also (57%).

Age also plays a factor, as younger talent is more likely to search for DE&I policies than their older counterparts. 70% of under 30s always look for this information when researching roles, compared to 52% of over 50s.

This showcases the crucial need for organisations to clearly communicate their DE&I policies and initiatives during the hiring process, with the growing expectations amongst job seekers for transparency and commitment to inclusive workplaces.

However, 38% of employees feel it is hard to find organisation-specific diversity and inclusion information or content when researching prospective employers. Having this information readily available and implemented into your hiring plans can help attract a wider range of talent.

The evolution of DE&I

The way organisations refer to DE&I is also evolving. Over the last two years, 17% of organisations say they have changed the way they refer to DE&I, although more than half (53%) have not made any changes, with 30% unsure if they have.

A change in terminology or language used for diversity initiatives can signify to potential new recruits and existing staff a shift in an organisation’s focus and priorities when it comes to DE&I. Our survey shows that over half (56%) of organisations refer to their initiatives as DE&I, with a quarter (25%) using the term DEIW (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Wellbeing), and 5% using DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging). These changes show the changing nature of DE&I efforts from a top-down level, as well as the increasing emphasis on wellbeing in the workplace.

Bolster your diversity efforts, officially

An official accreditation for your DE&I efforts can help give potential new hires the confidence to believe in your organisation’s commitment to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. Having a DE&I accreditation is an important step to help attract diverse candidates, although only 14% of organisations are actively working towards having official documentation of their diversity efforts. A further 18% are considering an accreditation, such as the UK’s leading DE&I standard The National Equality Standard (NES), while 26% are not considering it and 40% are unsure.

Expert insights

From insight to action: How Hays improved its diversity data collection

In January 2020, as the world’s leading recruitment business, we faced a significant challenge: only 27% of our UK and Ireland workforce (approximately 800 employees) had provided diversity metrics. Without a clear understanding of the diversity make-up or shape of our business, we couldn’t fully identify, understand, or address the barriers some employees faced. This transparency was crucial for our goal of fostering an inclusive workplace, especially given our position in the recruitment market.
