Abbey Green Block

Introduction to Abbey Green

The Abbey Green offers a safe space for exceptional children and young people with complex autistic spectrum disorders and challenging behaviours to live during the academic year. Unfortunately, the children and young people we support have exhausted all other avenues of academia, with mainstream and other SEND providers not being able to meet or facilitate their needs.

We have 4 lovely home focused houses that our young people call home throughout the school year, each one housing up-to 5 young people. We understanding that in order to support our special young people we need to provide a special space each with their own bedroom, living space, and garden, all of which have been specifically designed with their needs in mind, providing additional care through anti-slam doors, dimmed lights, and more.

The residential staff offer a rich waking-day curriculum beyond the school day where pupils can use the knowledge and skills learnt at school in home and community settings. The focus is on social, personal care, leisure, and play; older pupils attend increasingly to daily living and domestic skills. Use of community facilities is frequent and regular for a range of recreational, social, and fun-filled activities including, clubs, swimming, cinema and open air theatre at walking distance, bowling, using the gym, climbing, and hiking.

All pupils will benefit from 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 support from highly trained residential support workers, team managers, deputy managers and a registered manager as well as subject specialist teachers and learning mentors. The school benefits from an in house Positive Behaviour Support Team such that behaviours of concern can be assessed, planned for and monitored on a daily basis. All pupils will access Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy from our in-house therapy team.

In addition, our enriched staffing profile allows us to ensure that family support is a core part of our provision. All day pupils will receive regular home visits in order to support families to manage their challenging needs in the home environment, supporting families to stay together and reducing the risks of breakdowns in living arrangements.
