Welcome to Smurfit Westrock March

Catherine Carey – General Manager

Thank you for taking the time to read about our new senior leadership opportunity.

Smurfit Westrock is a NYSE listed company and the world’s largest paper-based packaging company with circa 100,000 colleagues in operations in over 50 countries across the globe.

To continue our success, we constantly recruit the best talent and experienced professionals.

Across the UK Integrated Division we have 8 sites each of whom support a wide customer portfolio. These sites operate a decentralised structure with local management responsibilities across operations, sales, finance and HR. However, they are also encouraged to work together to share best practice and meet on a regular basis to discuss operational plans and strategic priorities including:

  • Health and safety
  • Customer Service
  • Operational efficiencies and productivity plans
  • Equipment reliability
  • Budgets and cost initiatives
  • Talent development & employee wellbeing
  • New business & margin enhancement

I am the General Manager at the March site in Cambridgeshire. Following an internal move, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and creative Operations Director to join my Senior Leadership team.

The role is crucial in setting and delivering site business strategy and is responsible for ensuring the factory operates in a safe and efficient manner with key consideration towards the health & safety of all colleagues on site (including contractors), quality, reliability, continuous improvement, environmental, and cost controls.

We have almost 200 talented colleagues in our team. Our site is a highly automated, complex corrugated packaging plant, running a 3-shift pattern, 5 days per week. We offer a complex product offering to our FMCG, Produce and eCommerce customers. Servicing local, national and global brands our vision is “Proud to make complexity safe, simple and efficient”.

As you can imagine there are many technical aspects to this role e.g. ideally, you’ll be six sigma black belt certified.  Your key responsibilities will include: Production, Compliance and People. However, strong leadership skills are what I want to see most in an Operations Director. You will be a role model for many and ensure that colleagues are engaged and working towards achieving clearly defined objectives and targets whilst maintaining excellent factory relationships.

If you would like to work for a friendly and safety-first but performance driven culture with an emphasis on looking after one another and improving standards across the business, and you feel you have the skills and background to help me continue driving the March team to future success, I would welcome your application!
