Roughan and O’Donovan (ROD), a distinguished civil, environmental and structural engineering consultancy, has been at the forefront of their industry for over 50 years. During this time, ROD has built a reputation for expert engineering skills, delivering high quality bridge and highway projects that create real and lasting value for their clients and the communities they serve. An independently owned firm, ROD employs a multidisciplinary team of over 200 people, of 20 different nationalities, across its three offices.
Alongside their many prestigious projects, ROD has undertaken various commissions to develop the Irish Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, the Manual of Contract Documents for Road Works and the Irish National Annexes to the Eurocodes, in each case dissecting the established UK standards and adapting them to Irish conditions. This work provided the backbone for the Irish motorway and inter-urban road network, of which over 200km was designed by ROD.
Following huge success across their Irish business and the increasing demand for support of UK schemes, ROD opened an office in Otley, Leeds in 2019. The company is now looking to strategically increase its critical head count to support the continued growth of its UK operation and the servicing of its clients within local authorities, major contractors, and national D&B schemes.

Bridges
ROD has more than 40 years’ experience in planning, designing, inspecting and assessing bridges – both standalone and as part of major infrastructure projects. From award-winning cable-stayed bridges to modular footbridges and culverts, their bridge solutions combine engineering excellence with graceful design.
Highways
ROD has been involved in the planning, design and construction management of major transport projects in the UK, Ireland and overseas for over 25 years. Their portfolio features upgraded rail lines, light railways, motorways, rural roads, and public transport facilities.
Approach
ROD works collaboratively with public and private sector clients, including some of Europe’s largest design-build contractors and PPP consortia for design-build, ECI and PPP contracts. Their engineers and technicians adopt cutting-edge techniques and digital technologies to deliver efficient solutions on time and within budget.
Projects Highlights
Herring Bridge, Great Yarmouth, UK
ROD led the detailed design of this ‘nationally significant infrastructure project’ on behalf of BAM Farrans, a joint venture between BAM UK & Ireland and Farrans Construction. Their design partners were H&H, who provide global expertise in moveable bridges, and Norfolk-based architecture firm, Lanpro.
The £121m twin leaf bascule bridge is the town’s third crossing of the River Yare and enhances the port’s reputation as both an international gateway and a major UK offshore renewable energy, oil, and gas base.
ROD was involved in the project from 2018, providing a broad range of multidisciplinary engineering services to their client, including bridge, structural, highways, geotechnical, environmental, and drainage design.
Construction started in January 2021, and the scheme opened to traffic on 1 February 2024.
A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe dualling scheme
This £220 million upgrade scheme between Dungiven and Drumahoe in Northern Ireland involved the on-line/off-line improvement of the A6 trunk road from single carriageway to dual two-lane carriageway, including a bypass of Dungiven, with roundabouts connecting the scheme to the existing road network at either end.
ROD delivered the full detailed design for 25.5km of dual carriageway including structures between Dungiven and Drumahoe and provided a full-time designer’s site team, who worked closely with the design offices and the construction team monitoring construction of the works.
The scheme opened to traffic on 7 April 2023. In 2024, it was awarded a BREEAM Infrastructure ‘Excellent Whole Project Award’, with an exceptionally high score of 89.8%.
A6 Randalstown to Castledawson ECI
ROD, in 50:50 design joint venture with ARUP, delivered the detailed design for this £189m dual carriageway scheme between Castledawson and Randalstown on the A6, an important section of the North Western Transport Corridor in Northern Ireland. They also had a full-time designer’s site team working closely with the design offices and a contracting team monitoring construction of the works.
The scheme comprised 14.7km of high-quality dual carriageway, four new compact grade-separated junctions and 22 bridges as well as associated culverts, retaining walls, environmental barriers and environmental mitigation measures. It tied into the existing M22 and A6.
The scheme opened fully to traffic on 29 May 2021. In 2022, it won an CEEQUAL Excellent Sustainability Whole Team Award. In 2020, it won the Infrastructure Project of the Year award at the UK National Government Opportunities (GO) Excellence in Public Procurement Awards.
