About us

The Thames Vision

The tidal Thames is one of the greatest assets of London and the south east. Home to the UK’s largest port and busiest inland waterway for passengers and freight, it is also a centre for watersports and a major draw for visitors.

At the Port of London Authority it is their focus to help people make the most of the river, which runs 95 miles from Teddington Lock through the centre of London to the commercial port and estuary. Their core roles are to ensure navigational safety, improve the environment and promote the use of the Thames.

The Thames Vision 2035 river strategy, launched in 2016 captures six goals for increasing the use of the Thames in a safe and sustainable way across port trade, inland freight, passenger transport, sport, environment, culture and community.

The tidal Thames in 2050 will be a very different place as they collectively work towards a safe and sustainable future shaped by new technologies, changing cities, emissions reduction and climate resilience.
