Dear candidate,
Thank you for your interest in joining the Senior Leadership Team at the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). This is an important time for ONR, and I am pleased that you are considering bringing your leadership, experience and commitment to our organisation.
About ONR
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is the United Kingdom’s independent statutory regulator for nuclear safety, civil nuclear security, safeguards and conventional health and safety on licensed sites. Through our independent decision making and oversight, we provide confidence that nuclear activities across Great Britain meet the standards expected by Parliament and the public, ensuring people and the environment are protected. Our responsibilities span the full lifecycle of nuclear operations from the existing reactor fleet and fuel cycle facilities, through waste management and decommissioning, to defence and other licensed and authorised sites. We also regulate the safe transport of civil nuclear and radioactive materials, oversee the protection of sensitive nuclear information and account for civil nuclear materials in line with the UK’s international safeguards obligations. As new reactor designs, small modular reactors (SMRs), and advanced nuclear technologies (ANTs) emerge, we play an essential role in enabling innovation to progress safely and securely.
Our people
ONR has around 650 employees, working together as one team to ensure a safe nuclear sector for a secure and sustainable future. Every colleague has a part to play in that mission, and I am proud of the expertise, dedication and professionalism they bring to their work every day. We value and respect everyone’s contribution, and we are committed to building an inclusive culture where different perspectives are welcomed, innovation is encouraged, and people feel able to do their best work. Our values — Accountable, Open-Minded, Fair and Supportive — guide how we work with each other, with those we regulate, and with our wider stakeholders.
The opportunity
We are looking for a highly accomplished and credible leader, who can help shape ONR’s future and support our people to deliver work of national importance. The role offers the opportunity to provide authentic, visible and inspiring leadership across a directorate and the wider organisation, while contributing to the delivery of ONR’s strategy, priorities and long-term ambitions. As a trusted advisor and collaborative member of the senior leadership team, the successful candidate will lead change and continuous improvement, role-modelling ONR’s culture and values while building high-performing, inclusive teams. With maturity, judgement and strong emotional intelligence, you will be able to simplify complexity, influence effectively and create an environment that both supports and challenges people to deliver clear, effective outcomes in the public interest.
If you are motivated by public service, committed to strong leadership, and excited by the opportunity to contribute to ONR’s important mission, I would be delighted to consider your application.
