MOORLANDS SCHOOL

Moorlands is the oldest prep school in Leeds, founded in 1898, and relocated to its current location in 1967.  In 2022 Moorlands became a full member of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust (MIST) bringing with it the benefits of membership of a network of independent schools.

Moorlands School welcomes children aged 2 to 11 years, offering a nurturing environment that emphasises both academic excellence and personal development. As a member of MIST, Moorlands welcomes pupils of all faiths and none. The school prides itself on its inclusive ethos, small class sizes, and a broad curriculum that encompasses academics, sports, music, and the arts.

The campus boasts extensive facilities, including spacious grounds that provide ample opportunities for outdoor learning and play, a large recently-refurbished sports hall and a heated indoor swimming pool.

The history and traditions of Moorlands provide the basis for a perfect, all-round education. Moorlands School has a simple yet beautiful motto: ‘Intrepide!’ the spirit of which the school translates as being Inclusive, Independent, Industrious, Inquisitive and an Individual. In school we talk about how being intrepid takes many forms. It isn’t always a grand gesture; sometimes it just means ‘having a go’; attempting that difficult question; offering an answer in a lesson when you’re not quite sure; or simply trying something new. We offer a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment in which this culture of intrepidness can flourish, allowing Moorlands children to be brave and adventurous as they learn and grow.

THE METHODIST INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS TRUST (MIST)

In 2022 Moorlands became a full member of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust (MIST) bringing with it the benefits of membership of a network of independent schools.

Methodist schools are inclusive, welcoming communities, valuing excellence in academic, cultural and sporting activities and providing outstanding pastoral care. There are nine schools within the group, and it is part of a wider network of other Methodist Schools across England and Wales, both independent and state.

The group seeks to respect the local contexts in which its schools operate, delegating operational control while offering support, advice and investment centrally. In addition to servicing the needs of the Trust itself, the central team provides opportunities for the schools to work more closely together. Key elements of this include a Schools Conference, termly meetings of Heads, Bursars and Chairs of Governors, and specialist day events for other staff for example a safeguarding training day. The Trust also offers legal and financial guidance and support.

THE MOORLANDS WAY

At Moorlands, our priority is the happiness of our pupils. We want every child to feel safe and secure and we endeavour to create a caring, supportive environment that enables each individual to develop and shine. Moorlanders are encouraged to be independent, critical thinkers with enquiring minds and a love of learning. We offer our children many leadership and teamwork opportunities to grow their confidence and prepare them for future challenges.

We are privileged and proud to have played our part in the first stage of their educational journey and know that whatever path they go on to follow, they will surely move forward in true Moorlands style…Intrepid.

ISI

The school was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in June 2024 and comfortably met all the standards under the new ISI inspection framework. The reporting inspector’s feedback was exceptional, and it is a shame we can’t quote it word for word! You can see the full ISI inspection report here.
