About IT Services

Leeds Trinity University IT Services prides itself for putting students at the centre of all we do and regularly providing new services and innovations that make a real difference to the way our students learn, and our academic staff teach. Through our IT systems and our people, we support the university’s strategic aims. We seek to provide an integrated, University-wide approach to information technology, supporting learning and teaching, research, innovation, and the student experience.

Our department consists of 3 teams:

1st Line Support consists of our front-line Helpdesk. They deal directly with staff and students and compile and write our published support materials. As the first point of contact for most they provide initial support and help for all services and core desktop applications.

They also coordinate communications in the event of major incidents. Our 2nd Line Support Team act as an escalation point for the 1st Line Team and are responsible for hardware and software deployments and maintenance. They also get involved with departmentwide projects and rollouts and assist the 3rd Line Team where needed.

The 3rd Line Team undertake responsibility for technical architecture, major IT projects, IT Server Infrastructure, IT security and networking. They often facilitate user focus groups and discover user needs. This team also assist in the development of IT policies and procedures that help to ensure the most is being made from our IT investments.

Working closely with IT Services and academic colleagues around the university, the E-Learning team is responsible for encouraging good practice with technology enhanced learning and teaching including the development and support of Moodle, the university’s VLE and its integrated systems such as lecture capture and electronic submission services. The E-Learning team also provide pedagogic support and advice for blended and distance taught courses (including external partnerships and apprenticeships) and work closely with both administrative staff and the Quality Assurance office.

As a smaller university IT changes and innovations are encouraged and can happen quickly, often making us early adopters in the sector. Teams members have been invited to talk and share our experiences at sector wide conferences and events on multiple occasions.

Recent projects include:

  • Migration to a hyperconverged core architecture utilising Nutanix hardware, a VMware hypervisor and a split data centre model
  • Rapid adoption of Office 365 and a full deployment of Skype for Business

Planned future work includes:

  • Deployment of Microsoft Teams
  • Deployment of a replacement web CMS
  • Deployment of a new CAFM (Computer Aided Facilities Management System)
  • Replacement Intranet
  • Ongoing enhancement of IT teaching spaces
