About the council

The Isle of Wight Council is located on the Isle of Wight near the south coast of England. The council is responsible for the full range of local government activities on the Island serving a population of circa 140,000.

The island has a thriving visitor economy as well as exciting plans for the future including the regeneration of Newport Harbour, the upgrade of the transport interchange at Ryde and the development of a key employment site at Venture Quays in Cowes.

The Isle of Wight Council was created in 1995 as a unitary or all-purpose authority, covering the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight Council is made up of 39 electoral divisions, each represented by one Councillor. The Isle of Wight Council is made up of 39 areas, which are known as electoral divisions, As well as, but separate from the Isle of Wight Council there are 33 town and parish councils. The town and parish councils look after a variety of local services such as:

  • Recreation Grounds
  • Some amenity grass cutting
  • And many other facilities in their areas

 

They are generally regarded as a good council with positive audit and inspection results.
