About the Council
Gosport Borough Council is a listening organisation, they value customer and public opinion, and strive to deliver value for money services putting their customers at the heart of all they do. In providing their services, they value:
- Meeting the needs of their diverse community
- The professionalism of their staff
- Feedback on their services
- Their approachability
Gosport Borough Council (GBC) has existed since November 1922. Its aim is to work with the community to improve everyone’s quality of life and to ensure that now and in the future, Gosport is a good place, to live, work and visit.
Unlike most companies GBC is not trying to make a profit. It delivers services by spending money given to it by the Government through grants and subsidies and money raised through the collection of Council Tax and Business Rates.
Each household in Gosport pays Council Tax to GBC but only 14% of this is kept and used by GBC to deliver services such as Housing, Parks & Leisure, Environmental Health, Planning & Development and Refuse Collection. GBC is not responsible for schools and education, health and hospitals and roads and pavements. 72% of Council Tax collected is given to Hampshire County Council and the rest is given to the Police and Fire Authority.
