About Go Ape
The origins of Go Ape began with an adventure. Becs and Tris Mayhew were slowly traveling through France with their six-month old daughter when they discovered a family swinging through the trees. The teenagers were loving it, but so were the parents. “Look at their eyes, they haven’t had this much fun together in years. We should be doing this!”.
Jettisoning the comfort blanket of their corporate careers, they quit their jobs, sold all they had, borrowed more and risked it all on becoming on-tree-preneurs. There was no financial safety net. It was succeed or lose everything. Friends and family fell into two camps – those who thought they were mad to go for it, and a handful who said they would be mad if they didn’t. Ex-soldier Tris said: “Military training encourages bold ideas, seizing the initiative and managing high risks. I wasn’t afraid of failure but was afraid of not trying.”
Becs and Tris set about creating the company they could be proud of. 20 years, 35 UK and 15 USA locations and over 10 million customers later, they continue to live one huge adventure.
Go Ape Ethos
Keeping the "adventure" in adventure
- They believe zero risk equals zero development. Without an element of developmental risk, it isn’t an adventure, it’s a ride. They boost confidence and risk management skills and get a buzz turning "I can't" into "I can". They aim to challenge, surprise and excite, designing in customer wow.
- They support the Campaign For Adventure which seeks to show that life is best approached in a spirit of exploration, adventure and enterprise.
Be socially and environmentally responsible, but not preachy
- Go Ape is for purpose as much as for profit. They are about "creating adventures and encouraging everyone to live life more adventurously," because they believe life is so much more rewarding when lived boldly, out of your comfort zone.
- They share success and create worthwhile, rewarding jobs. They will be fair and reasonable, and a tad more so. Strong trust and respect-based relationships forge strong business. They aim to treat customers, colleagues, suppliers and partners how they would like to be treated themselves. They seek to be two steps better in everything they do and are on a journey towards becoming a B Corp.
Do the right thing
- They want to do right. Ultimately, before finally green lighting any decision, they ask ‘is it the right thing to do?’. If they reflect that it isn’t, they won’t do it.
Their Mission
- From their Suffolk base they’re plotting ways to get the whole world swinging through the trees. They still have plenty of big hairy goals and their mission remains to be the best adventure company on the planet.
- They’ve grown up a lot since they launched at Thetford Forest back in 2002, but that doesn’t mean they’ll rest on their laurels. They are committed to creating outdoor adventure that great Britons, great Americans, and generally great people will adore. Why not join them, and live life adventurously?
