Welcome
Welcome to the George Dixon Academy.
I hope to give you a brief insight into our Academy and ethos which can be encapsulated by our motto: a posse ad esse (from possibility to reality).
We see ourselves as a family school community, committed to excellence and achievement.
GDA is a great place to be: it is a happy and successful Academy. The staff are caring and totally committed to nurturing the achievement and development of our children. We believe this is why many people hold the institution in such high regard. We are proud but never complacent.
The Academy is an 11-18, mixed school with approximately 1,000 students. It is situated in the heart of Edgbaston, with Handsworth, Ladywood, Smethwick and the City Centre on our doorsteps.
In terms of behaviour, uniform and Academy standards, we are very traditional. We expect students to wear our full uniform, attend every day, behave appropriately and work hard. We also expect all to take part in the many extra-curricular activities available. Children thrive in our friendly, family atmosphere because we respect and encourage each other in a climate which prides itself on everyone doing their best. Our positive ethos is central to our success which is promoted through our PRIDE values (PRAISE for each other, RESPECT for ALL, IMPROVEMENT of the self, DEVELOPMENT of the Academy community and wider and high EXPECTATIONS). In our Sixth Form, students are offered a range of opportunities that familiarise them with universities and broaden their understanding of study and employment opportunities beyond the Academy.
George Dixon has become successful on the basis of consistent and continual improvement. We are described by the SSAT as being “in the top 20% of schools nationally for outstanding student progress”.
We aim to meet the needs of our pupils through a well-planned curriculum supplemented by a variety of enrichment activities. We have a strong emphasis on reading and ask families to encourage this too. We expect pupils to do their best, to behave well and push themselves to achieve high standards.
We have a superb, enthusiastic, stable, and hard-working staff, who want to see all of our students do well. They value the partnership between home and school. By working together we can help the children to excel and feel happy and encouraged in their learning.
I look forward to welcoming you in person, through the doors of our very special Academy, very soon.
Yours Sincerely,
Anthony Hamilton
