Healthcare - why you?

The healthcare sector is a broad industry where people look after others and, as an organisation, we look after you as our team members.

Whether you are treating patients or providing administration support to our clinical services, working in healthcare means you will be making a difference to the lives of others, each and every day.

Healthcare is one of the most in-demand industries across UK. The NHS is one of the largest employers in the world, with approximately 1.7 million workers across Great Britain - so there are plenty of opportunities to develop and expand your knowledge and experience in your chosen field.

Working in healthcare means that no two days are the same. Whether you're working in the community, in a care home or in the office, you never quite know what the day ahead will bring.

The broad scale of healthcare means that qualifications and medical knowledge is not always a requirement. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a requirement for all healthcare professionals to have spent 4+ years at university and received all A* at A levels. Some roles will need these achievements. However, a passion for patient care and a willingness to develop means you can earn while you learn!

What personal qualities do you need to work in healthcare?

Care work is hugely rewarding and challenging. You will be responsible for looking after people at their most vulnerable, therefore you need to be friendly and compassionate as well as professional.

Below are some of the qualities we look for in our team.

  • Dedicationmany in our community workforce view their work as more of a calling than a job. For many team members the role is part of their identity and putting others first comes naturally.
  • Experiencewe don't mean the type of experience you gain by studying, as no formal qualifications or training are needed. Healthcare welcomes people from all backgrounds, so bringing your varied life experience to work means you can relate to patients more effectively.
  • Friendlinessif a patient is withdrawn or exhibiting issues, seeing a friendly face is vital to help them feel safe and lift their spirits. Being open and warm ensures you build rapport with your patients and develop better working relationships as well as long-term friendships.
  • Communicationfrom new-born babies, right up to the older generation, many patients struggle to communicate. Interacting clearly and learning how individuals express their needs will assist with effective working practices. Good communication with colleagues also ensures that clients receive a consistent and high quality level of care.
  • Attentivenesshumans are social by nature so just being there for them is a huge part of the work we do. In addition to assisting with medical needs, spending time, and listening to patients is one of the most valuable services you can provide.
  • Sense of Humourthey say laughter is the best medicine sometimes and it certainly is within our teams. While patients can suffer from serious health issues that need treating, making them smile, even for a short time, can make the world of difference to their wellbeing.
  • Positivityyou will naturally build close relationships with your patients, and it may be difficult to see their health suffer. However, if you can remain strong and positive during these difficult times it will help your patients face such difficulties. The benefit of working in the community is that you have that you have a relationship with patients that you do not get in the acute setting – so you follow them through their recovery journey and help them along the whole way.
  • Empathyit is important to place yourself in your patients’ shoes. What would you feel in their situation? How would you react? Imagining yourself in such scenarios allows you to build a greater understanding of your patients’ mindset and behaviour, helping you provide the individual tailored care and support they need.
