welcome

Deputy Headteacher – Welcome to Burnage Academy for Boys

We are an outstanding school, with outstanding results.

Further to the successful promotion of our Deputy Headteacher to Principal of a local school in May 2022, we are looking for someone with substance who will add value to our leadership team. The vacated role was pastoral, but we are more interested in recruiting a senior leader who has a proven track record and who is flexible in terms of their commitment to the aims and priorities of the school.

Our purpose is clear: we are looking for an outstanding, motivated and credible leader to enhance our strong Leadership Team; someone who can demonstrate an immediate impact.

Our mission statement is simple and encapsulates everything we are about and striving to achieve.

An inclusive school community where students, staff and families all work together to ensure that boys will be the best they can be.

We aim to develop a school where everyone is valued and can achieve success, enabling them to make a positive contribution to the community.

Your track record will be such that you gain the respect of staff, students, parents and carers. You will be able to demonstrate staff development experience and expertise. Most importantly, you will have a passion for education and students’ learning, with the determination to make a positive difference and commitment to continuous improvement.

We are a highly cohesive leadership team with a significant amount of experience. All members of the team are hugely invested and committed to the school. We are looking for someone who shares these values and is passionately committed to empowering our boys to become the best they can be.

Our staff are equally cohesive and are passionately committed to our mission and purpose. Our boys are appreciative of the highest levels of care and investment that they receive consistently.

Our values are particularly pertinent to our school. Care runs through the very fabric of our school, it is what is visible every day with students who know they are cared for in our highly inclusive community.

Developing resilience is integral to all that we do. We firmly believe that young people, especially boys, need to build resilience in order to thrive in society. Education is the bedrock of building resilience, providing young people with the foundations to build a brighter future. In developing resilience, we develop young people’s independence.

The successful candidate will ensure that the school’s mission, vision and values are realised and delivered consistently and effectively. S/he will ensure that we meet the needs of our young people through high quality teaching and support that maximises all pupils’ potential and enables them to become enthusiastic and independent learners.

We are proud of our boys and they are proud of their school.

We would be delighted for you to visit and that can be arranged through our recruitment advisor, Martin Blair at Hays Leadership (T: 07736791138, E: martin.blair@hays.com) who is also available for an informal conversation about the role or to discuss making an application.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Karl Harrison
Headteacher

about

About Burnage Academy

Burnage Academy for Boys is an Ofsted Outstanding school with a reputation for excellence that stretches back 90 years. We are a school where everyone is valued, pupils achieve excellent grades, and where staff feel a true part of the school community.

We are a highly inclusive, 11-16 all boys’ school serving some of the most deprived areas of Manchester. We thrive on the cultural diversity of our student population and have approximately 35 languages and 40 countries of origin represented within the school. 80% of our pupils are classed as EAL in terms of not speaking English at home and over 45% do not have English as their first language. 55% of pupils have required pastoral input over and above form tutor checking at the school. 36% of pupils are in receipt of Free School Meals.

We have a strong and supportive Trust Board chaired by a former Headteacher.

Our number on roll has improved by 6% in the last year and we currently have 910 students in the school. (PAN is 900). We are financially viable with strong reserves despite the extreme challenges schools are currently facing across the country.

We work with approximately 40 feeder primary schools from across the city.

We are committed to inclusivity and provide a nurturing environment to support pupils with EHCPs and SEN. Our safeguarding work is highly effective and our pastoral provision is excellent.

Achievement

Our 2019 results place us in the top 3% of boys’ performance in the North West of England with English and Maths being in the top 1%. Our results for PP students outperformed non-PP nationally.

We were the highest performing of the 27 Manchester schools that accept boys in 2019 and our progress is higher than all national comparators.

Our 2022 achievement increased by more than the Manchester average in terms of attainment 8 and our progress 8 score in Sisra (based on 2019 at present) is +0.79 against a national picture for boys of approximately -0.28.

Even with inevitable adjustments to P8 with the national increase in results, we still expect our achievement to be close to a grade higher on average for every single student, in every single subject, compared to boys nationally.

Our work with PP students is outstanding and, despite the challenges faced throughout the pandemic, our P8 is currently estimated by SISRA for Disadvantaged students at +0.55 and comfortably exceeds nationally comparatives for non-Disadvantaged students.

This has been achieved despite the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on inner city schools in terms of absence and challenges with working effectively from home.

Our Subject Progress Indices (which do not allow for a national comparative with boys) are positive for every single subject that we did in 2022. We are especially proud of the incredible and consistent commitment of our staff throughout this most challenging time.

Values

We will teach students the skills to face all challenges in life with determination and self-awareness.

We will create confident individuals who are able to think critically and make informed decisions.

We will go further to make a difference to our students, staff and families, creating a safe space in school.
