Benefits

benefits main

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council currently employs approximately 600 staff offering a vast range of employment opportunities in various different areas of work.

We offer a selection of benefits to our staff. Take a look below at some of the benefits that you can expect from working for us.

Training and development

We are committed to the training and personal development of our staff and we offer a training and development programme to help those who want to develop or update their skills.

Flexible working

We offer new ways of working to meet the demands of employees who want to achieve a better balance between their work and their other priorities (including caring for children or elderly parents, gaining further education and qualifications or pursuing leisure activities).

We employ both full and part-time staff. We also have flexible working hours, which allow us to provide the best customer service possible.

Annual leave

Full-time staff are entitled to 32 days' annual leave(this is exclusive of eight bank holidays per year). The annual leave year runs from 1 April to 31 March.

Part-time staff receive a pro-rata amount of annual leave and statutory days.

Local Government Pension Scheme

We are all aware of how important it is to save for our retirement. All permanent and employed temporary staff aged between 16 and 75 are automatically entered into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).

Healthcare Cash Plan Scheme

The council offers a healthcare cash plan covering day to day healthcare expenditure (up to agreed annual policy limits) such as dental and optical care, as well as other therapies such as chiropractic treatment. This is funded for all employees on an opt-in basis at the basic level of cover, which you can choose to upgrade via monthly payroll deductions from your salary. Family members such as partners can be added for an additional fee, and children can be covered free of charge.

Appraisals

Everyone who works for the council takes part in an appraisal process which is an on-going cycle of review, planning, development and evaluation. It is an opportunity for a two-way conversation between staff and their manager to take an overall look at performance, work content, skills and competencies required to be effective within a job role, to look back on what has been achieved, and to agree objectives, training and development for the next year.

My wellbeing

The health and wellbeing of our staff is our priority

We want to improve the delivery of services to the residents of our borough through a high performing, healthy and motivated workforce.

As an employer we are continually reviewing and introducing new initiatives to maintain good health and wellbeing, both in and out of work. We have a dedicated Wellbeing group whose aim is to promote, engage and raise awareness of work-life balance, healthier lifestyles and to organise events and various health campaigns.

Mental health and wellbeing support

Includes a range of supportive measures to help support colleagues including face to face counselling, an Employee Assistance offering a free 24/7 telephone counselling service, wellbeing training, occupational health service and a trained cohort of staff who volunteer to become mental health champions. In addition, we promote events and activities to encourage active involvement amongst staff.

Other benefits

Other benefits include access to salary sacrifice schemes for lease cars and cycles, free onsite parking on campus (subject to a waiting list), monthly onsite clinical massage, free flu vaccinations, subsidised health checks, travel discounts, and interest free loans for travel.
