Natalie Marks
I am a former student of Barr’s Hill School and was delighted to start my teaching career here. I feel well supported, professionally challenged and I have a sense of belonging here. Barr’s Hill School has given me the opportunity to progress throughout my career and I am now a Head of Faculty in Sport, and a Teaching and Learning lead for Year 8 and 9. There is plenty of support from staff at all levels, and we all share one vision - To increase the life chances and aspirations of our diverse group of students by raising standards of education and providing exceptional experiences. Barr’s Hill School ensures that all students receive a top quality education that puts students first and remove all barriers to their learning. The experiences that the students get both in and out of the classroom ensures that they can develop the skills and qualities they need to be highly successful. The school has a relentless focus on learning and as a result student progress is rapidly improving. I am proud to have worked here for the last 9 years and look forward to progressing further in my career at the school in the future.

I joined Barr’s Hill as a newly qualified teacher. I am now in my eighth year of teaching Mathematics. I live every school day through the school values which are really important to me; Students First, No Barriers and It’s about Learning. I really enjoy working in a school where the values of the institution align with my own. The job is hard (like all teaching jobs!) but the shared sense of moral purpose and vision and the team approach here make it much more rewarding and positive. Working at Barrs’ Hill has given me a raft of great opportunities to work with colleagues and collaboratively with other Trust schools, not only to better my own practice but also to develop as a leader. The leadership training programmes and support have been really beneficial and last year I was appointed as Head of Maths. We also have a great social calendar out of school, staff here work together and the atmosphere is positive and ‘can do’. Perhaps most importantly, our students are… unique! Since the day I came for interview here, I have been taken aback by how bold and honest they are; they speak their mind but with a charming innocence. They aren’t perfect, but they are ours, the reason we work hard and the reason we can raise a smile at even the most difficult of times.
