Our force is made up of over 5,000 warranted Police Officers and staff and is supported by a range of volunteers. Structured into four main operational policing functions, and with further services provided through collaboration with partners, we provide the many complex policing services our public need, whenever and wherever they need them.

The demand for our services is increasingly characterised by high-risk, complex, and often hidden crimes, many of which affect the most vulnerable in society. In the year to April 2018 we received nearly one million calls for service through 999 and 101, including significant increases in our demand for sexual offences (+9 percent) domestic abuse crimes (+6 percent), and violence against the person (+5 percent).

Ground-breaking work on data analytics and digital technology is allowing us to take a fresh approach in prioritising and deploying resources, based on risk, threat and harm to victims and the wider community. We collaborate extensively with partners and other forces across the south west, and beyond.

Our operational functions rely upon effective enabling services, incorporating the full range of business and professional services needed in an organisation of our size and complexity. Through these services we not only support the effective day to day operation of the police but ensure that we are effective in our continuous improvement and transformation to achieve better working lives for our people and better public outcomes for our communities.
