IT Services
This is an exciting time to join ITS at Anglia Ruskin University as we create our digital future by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in supporting over 30,000 students and more than 3,000 staff across three main campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford, and Peterborough. As an example, we are currently embarking on implementing a new CRM using Microsoft Dynamics; an ESM to replace multiple helpdesk systems used across the business; new research costing tool with Work Tribe; introduction of RPA into our Admissions process; moving more into the cloud with Microsoft Azure; Application virtualisation. We have implemented in the last two years Microsoft Teams soft telephony; Microsoft 365 rolled out to all staff and students; LMS Assessments; Degree apprenticeships for eight police forces; new university in Peterborough; Added Nutanix hyper-converged services for our on-premise solutions; redeveloped eVision for students to name just a few.
We are split into three key functional areas, each led by a director committed to delivering our transformational Digital Strategy and excellent customer service.
Infrastructure & Operations
supporting all the servers and storage, physical and virtual, in two datacentres providing the compute to run all the university’s applications. Along with the on-premise infrastructure, we also maintain the Azure tenancy, manage backups and triage security events from our security operations centre, additionally providing support for the other teams in IT services. We offer 24-hour on-call support on that infrastructure to ensure any outages are dealt with promptly.
Support the networking equipment across the multiple campuses and buildings ARU has, including WAN, datacentre network, edge network, Wireless, and firewalls. We offer 24 hours support for the physical infrastructure to maintain service for staff/students.
Manage and administer the Microsoft suite of services and aligned tools and technologies, including the applications, databases, storage and data that comprise our public and private cloud environments, ensuring appropriate and effective integration with on-campus services.
Role is highly varied and means interacting with staff from all business areas- professional services and academia. On a single day, it might be troubleshooting a cable in a classroom, followed by high-level strategic budget discussions.
Role encompasses the security of the networks, servers, systems, software, databases, applications, storage, and data that comprise our information and communications technology (ICT) services. Resources may reside on our premises, in the cloud or as a hybrid provision between the two.
Oversees the day-to-day operation of our learning space and deskside support services, maintaining agreed on service levels through prioritising tasks and applying escalation procedures.
Provide comprehensive deskside support services for staff, including personal visits to office spaces and to meet with staff on campus. They provide and maintain the student IT open access spaces and student IT loan lockers, alongside teaching space and Microsoft Teams room support.
maintenance and support of student IT lab hardware and associated software, managing the media loans service. Print Services Provide a comprehensive digital print and copy service to university students, staff, and external clients, using a range of complex digital equipment and software packages. Ensuring all confidentiality and legal requirements are met whilst providing a service of excellence.
Applications & Digital Development
Are divided into three main areas: Business, Academic and Student Lifecycle. We have over 150 applications that the teams have to maintain and support. We offer 24 hours support for essential student-facing systems, including Canvas (our Learning Management System), SITS/eVision (our Student Records System), and ExLibris (our Library Management System).
team comprises Product Managers and User Experience (UX) Designers. We aim to ensure that our users are at the centre of everything we build, building the right things at the right time to help achieve ARU’s strategic goals.
team are skilled in Microsoft C# .Net, Sitecore, SharePoint, TRIBAL SITS, Microsoft Dynamics, and Microsoft Azure DevOps. They are responsible for all development activities, including identity management, integration, intranet, website and bespoke development for all of the university.
and Data Warehouse team build data models on Microsoft SQL Server to provide an integrated history of operational data sources consumed by various reports hosted on QlikView and QlikSense.
function is responsible for all UAT testing, and they are responsible for ensuring that a testing strategy is in place for any new developments or significant changes. In some circumstances, they will also provide the testing themselves.
Projects & Planning
within IT Services are responsible for delivering a large portfolio of Digital / IT programmes and projects across the University. Our key responsibilities are project & programme management, annual project planning, risk & Issue management/tracking, capital budget management and providing advice and guidance to project teams across ARU.
are the main point of contact between the business and IT Services, promoting communication and addressing any concerns, should they arise. We engage with the business and advocate for them, acting as the “translator” between the Faculty or Professional Service and IT Services. We work closely with colleagues across the university, supporting them in defining their requirements and develop business cases.
led by the Enterprise Architect, includes solution architects and business analysts. We are responsible for developing, applying, and governance the technical networking, integration and application architectural standards. We are involved early in projects to ensure architectural alignment and to undertake the business analysis, as required. We are involved in projects and initiatives from concept through procurement, implementation and beyond.
we are committed to developing digital skills for our staff and students. We support skills development through face-to-face courses, online learning, video production and materials. Working with services across the University, we aim to make this integral to administrative activities and teaching & learning.
we underpin the running of IT Services overseeing all budgets and purchasing, capital and revenue. We provide a wide range of administrative support to projects, training and liaising with external suppliers.
With over 170 positions across these areas, ITS is led by a Leadership Team, who is responsible for all activities and processes that are carried out in the department. The three Directors, alongside the CDIO, form our Senior Leadership, who are accountable for the budget and direction of the department.
At the heart of ITS is customer experience, using feedback to drive value and quality in all areas that we support to ensure our wider-ranging services and technologies continue to underpin the organisation's learning, teaching, research, and operations.
These encompass a range of cutting-edge technologies, including extensive campus wireless; a digital learning environment; a vast range of specialist software packages; and specialist business applications to support our students’ journey through the institution.
