Welcome
We want to see a future where all people across Birmingham have access to the very best palliative and end of life care, when where and how they need it. We are working closely with our Hospice and NHS partners to rise to the challenge or meeting the needs of a diverse community of people across the city. We are in a unique position to become the UK leaders in the development of cultural palliative and end of life care. Together we must rise to this challenge if we are to truly meet the needs of the whole community. WE feel the best way to build on what we have already achieved is to recruit and retain the best people and those who represent the diversity of our community. We are proud of what we do and hope others will see what we are trying to achieve as exiting progressive.
John Taylor and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospices have a rich and long history of been the principle providers of specialist palliative and end of life care across Birmingham. We have laid the foundations by coming together as one organisation, we will have completed this process when we merge on the 1st of August 2021. In preparation for the changes a new CEO and Executive Management Team have been appointed who will lead the new organisation and retain the two trusted brands of John Taylor Hospice and Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice. We will have a single model of care, community and inpatient units in Erdington and Selly Park.
These changes will be better for patients and families, we will have integrated care delivered in partnership with other Hospices and NHS partners, offering people consistent and joined up services across the whole of the city. No matter where people live, they will have access to the same high quality palliative and end of life care services. As one integrated organisation we’ll be more able to meet the growing needs for palliative and end of life care and respond to the healthcare challenges of the future. Together we’ll be a stronger voice for palliative and end of life care with health and social care providers and a more effective partner in integrated care systems of the future. By coming together as one organisation, we’ll be more financially resilient through the cost efficiencies of a single structure and better able to attract income from NHS commissioners as one citywide hospice provider.
Key to our success are our people. We have dedicated hardworking staff who need development, support and excellent leadership. They have shown incredible reliance over the last 18 months given the challenges of COVID-19 and the merger of the two organisations.
We must invest and support them so they are able to sustain delivery of the highest quality of care. What our teams do is nothing but remarkable, it’s a tough job but hugely rewarding. We need to treat them as such and find effective ways of recruiting and retaining staff from the rich source of people across our city. The Merger of St Marys and John Taylor Hospice completes on August the 1st we have a newly formed Board of Trustees, Management Team and organisational structure in place. In September we will be developing our new strategy, while working with our colleagues to identify our new values and behaviours that will define the culture of our new organisation.
As a commitment to our teams we are appointing a new of Director of People and Culture. We would like to appoint a Leader and Manager who understands people, someone who is great listener who can embrace new approaches to leadership and management, who believes coaching is as important as performance, and who truly believes in the need to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. You will have a track record in leading change and working with partner organisations in shaping a future workforce. Ideally you will have successfully helped another organisation to implement effective approaches to diversity and inclusion. You must be passionate about this and have a deep desire and commitment to building a workforce that represents the diversity of our community.
We have included further information about the history of the two originations, hopefully you will be interested in shaping the future of palliative and end of life care across Birmingham.

The People Team
The people team have been brought together from teams across both Hospices. There has been a focus on maintaining a presence on both sites. The processes are similar but systems are different. We are currently migrating John Taylor on to the I-Trent HR Systems which has been used at St Marys for 3 years.
The structure of the People & Culture Team is as follows:
