About us section

About Wakefield

The Wakefield district covers 338 square kilometres and is home to over 320,000 people in a diverse range of city, urban and rural communities.  In addition to the City of Wakefield, it has five major towns (Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingley, Normanton, and Pontefract), and a number of villages dotted in the rolling countryside.

It is served by excellent road and rail connections, good public transport, and is well placed to access other regional centres such as Leeds, Sheffield and York.  This makes the district accessible to candidates from a geographically wide area.

Wakefield has a proud heritage, including the beautiful Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Hepworth Gallery as well as Production Park, an internationally-renowned centre for the live events industry.  We also celebrate local heritage with the National Coal Mining Museum, Sandal and Pontefract Castles, and offer a variety of arts at the Wakefield Theatre Royal, and there are plans to make Wakefield the creative hub for the North.  These will all be showcased in our bid to become a City of Culture for 2025.

These are exciting times for the Wakefield district and the Council, so come and help us make that aspiration a reality.

Vision
Vision

What are Values and why are they important?

Ambitious. Caring. Integrity. Respect

These are an important part of the Council’s DNA. Not only do they help people understand what we stand for, they should inspire in us good ethical behaviour in the way we work to deliver strategic priorities for the benefit of citizens who live and work in our district, as well as local businesses. They also highlight the Council’s commitment to ongoing learning and continuous improvement.

Our Council Values support our Vision, shape our culture and reflect what is important to us.  They are the essence of our identity and while job knowledge is important our core Values help the Council run smoothly.  Values inform colleagues, potential new recruits, customers and clients about who we are and what we are about.

The achievement of the Council’s priority, ‘Successful Council’, hinges on the values, skills, knowledge and productivity of our people.  Consequently, our ability to attract, recruit, develop and retain the right people is essential.  Please read our People Strategy Working for Wakefield - our People Strategy 2019 - 2022 - Wakefield Council for more information.

About the team section

A bit about us - Internal Audit, Counter Fraud and Risk Management Team

As audit manager, or a lead auditor, you will be part of the Internal Audit, Counter Fraud and Risk Management Team.  The team has a variety of experienced and qualified internal audit staff, and some new trainee auditors just starting out on their journey.

Our key role is to provide assurance and consultancy services to assess and improve the Council’s governance, risk management and control processes.  We also provide external services to two organisations (West Yorkshire Joint Services and Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation), thereby offering an excellent range of internal audit work and opportunities for development.

We report administratively to the Chief Finance Officer and are part of the Chief Executive’s Unit, based at Wakefield One, a high quality and purpose built office space.  This is only a short walk from Wakefield Westgate Station and the Merchant Gate Car Park and is easily accessible to our other key buildings and external clients.  Whilst staff are expected to maximise contact with their clients we are moving towards a more hybrid way of working.  This will provide some opportunities to work from home where appropriate.

Our Vision Section

Our vision

Our ultimate vision is aligned to the profession’s own mission statement for internal auditing which is: ‘to enhance and protect organisational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice and insight’.

This vision will be achieved through the implementation of the new structure for the Internal Audit Team, which is designed to:

  • Increase the use of data analytics to improve the efficiency of our work, and maximise assurances.
  • Improve our understanding of each corporate directorate, so that our assurance and consultancy work can be aligned to the most significant risks associated with delivering agreed strategies.
  • Improve the effectiveness and timeliness of our assurance and consultancy work.
  • Help identify and then coordinate with other assurance providers, maximising coverage and minimising duplication of effort.
  • Provide a clear career path, and help mitigate succession planning risks.

The roles of Audit Manager and Lead Auditor will play a pivotal role in helping us make that vision a reality.  In particular, they will directly liaise with corporate directors and their management teams, to better understand their strategies, priorities, key risks, and business needs.  From this risk-based internal audit plans will be developed and then delivered.

Each role, to varying degrees, will also help in supporting more junior staff develop and achieve their potential.
