Job opportunities with
Octopus Energy

Welcome

Welcome

The energy industry in Britain is ruled by a handful of complacent dinosaurs peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery and poor customer service. In 2016, Octopus entered the market to disrupt the status quo with energy that's good for the planet, good for your wallet, and, honestly, good for your soul. Since then, we've been picking up 30,000 customers a month on average, and now supply energy to over 400,000 UK homes (and counting). To this day, 91% of our customers rate us as 5* Excellent on TrustPilot; and we’re the only supplier to be recommended by consumer champion, Which?.

We do things differently. Our prices are fair and transparent, and we don't lock you into a contract, so you can leave at any time. In fact, we try to make everything as easy as possible for you, from the simplicity of our bills to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit you — 8am‐10pm, 7 days a week.

We want to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of our tariffs use 100% green electricity — and they're no more expensive than our competitors' non‐green tariffs. You can also carbon offset the gas you use if you want to minimise your environmental impact even further.

As industries go, none are quite so complex as energy. That's why we're looking for super-talented people to help us make it fairer, greener, and more affordable for people in the UK. Please have a look at our current vacancies, we look forward to receiving your CV.

About us

About us

Power for the people

We're doing energy better — for you and for the environment.

Why?

We do things differently. Our prices are fair and transparent, and we don't lock you into a contract, so you can leave at any time. In fact, we try to make everything as easy as possible for you, from the simplicity of our bills to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit our customers — 8am‐10pm, 7 days a week.

The better choice, whether it's for home, or business

We provide an easy, affordable energy option for the UK's visionary businesses. Whether you're one of the world's biggest football clubs or selling magic wands in Brighton, we'll supply your business with power from the sun.

We work with amazing brands like Arsenal FC and Marks & Spencer, helping legendary UK institutions lead the charge on sustainability nationwide.

Renewable energy as standard

We want to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of our tariffs use 100% green electricity — and they're no more expensive than our competitors' non‐green tariffs. You can also carbon offset the gas you use if you want to minimise your environmental impact even further.

And we make sure today's renewables infrastructure keeps on turning, generating clean, green energy to power the UK. We're backed by Octopus Investments, the UK's largest investor in solar power, responsible for nearly 40% of the nation's large scale solar generation.

Energy fit for the future

While we look after your energy supply today, we're also building technology that will define the industry's future, from the big ideas to the small.

In 2017, we launched Octopus Tracker, a UK‐first tariff championing price transparency like never before, offering fair daily rates based on the wholesale price of energy.

Then, in 2018, we became the only supplier to really harness the potential of smart meter technology with Agile Octopus, a time of use tariff with half‐hourly rates allowing customers to adjust their consumption to times when the wholesale price of energy is cheapest.

Next came Octopus Go, a tariff designed just for EV drivers, with a super cheap night rate so these early adopters of the future of green transport can always wake up fully charged.

And it's not just about home energy:

Octopus Electric Vehicles is helping UK drivers switch to greener cars, providing everything from the car itself to smart charging options. We're getting our world ready for this electric revolution with Powerloop, an EV leasing bundle introducing vehicle‐to‐grid charging to UK homes. Drivers use their cars to power their homes during times of peak energy demand to relieve pressure on the grid.

Nia Hughes, one of our energy specialists, chats about Octopus Energy's renewable credentials, the new Leicester digs, and her work researching ways to help local towns go green.

Why did you join Octopus?go

I studied politics and international studies at university with a particular focus on climate change and renewable energy. After I graduated I delved further into that area of research, then it came time to start the job hunt.

I loved Octopus’ renewable focus, and ambition to provide energy both green AND cheap. For example, rather than buying pricey renewable gas, Octopus uses natural gas and carbon offsets any emissions with reforestation projects in Brazil. Same environmental impact, much lower cost.

So many people think you have to sacrifice a good deal to go green – but it’s absolutely not one or the other. It’s great that Octopus is working to combine those two crucial factors to offer renewable tariffs at cracking rates.

Initiatives like that drew me to Octopus, so I upped sticks from Warwick and moved to Leicester to start the job!

Have you had much opportunity to continue your work in renewable energy research?go

The summer after graduation, I was actually awarded a grant funding research into the potential to reform energy in a particular town from fossil fuels to renewables. It was a really cool opportunity, though a little daunting, as I was the first ever winner to come from a humanities background rather than science or engineering.

A think tank called Climate Change Solutions got hold of my research and we’ve since collaborated on a number of projects. I’ve spoken on several panels and round table discussions alongside industry professionals, academics, and other energy suppliers about ways to bring renewable energy to local communities.

Our next big push is getting local schools to go green. Super exciting – I can’t say much more about it at the moment, as we’ll release the proposal in April, but watch this space.

What do you do at Octopus?go

I am an energy specialist in the operations team, helping customers with anything and everything to do with their supply.

What are you working on at the moment?go

Right now, as well as my day-to-day ops role, I’m getting into the nitty gritty of metering issues and ‘industry stuff’ – working with some of the other operations guys to streamline hairy industry processes across the board and update incorrect details when we find them.

Specifically we’re improving meter serial number updates, and working on cross-metering issues (when a meter is recorded as belonging to the wrong address).

What's the most challenging part of your job?go

Lots of little things build up to make a big impact. Energy companies all have different processes, so trying to find ways to carry out improvements and quick fixes between our systems can be a struggle. Involves a lot of communication and cooperation.

What's the best part of your job?go

The people I work with. Everyone around me really does care.

Plus – there’s a really exciting, fresh vibe all the time in the Leicester office. We’re growing so fast, you see about five new people every time you walk in! We’re spreading down to the next floor of the building, and really starting to make the space our own. We just put a load of plants around. Lots of coffee and bagel runs. All that good stuff.

Any message for people thinking of switching?go

Go on – we’re good. Cheap and green.

Any message for people who've already switched?go

Thanks! You chose Octopus, you chose renewables – you’re helping us save the planet!
