Trevor’s story began in retail, working in supermarkets where he eventually became store manager. But deep down, he always had a fascination with how things work. “I was always interested in DIY and fixing things,” he recalls. That curiosity led him to take a leap of faith - leaving his retail career behind to retrain in electrical installation at college for three years. When a friend working at Mitie mentioned job openings, Trevor seized the opportunity, kickstarting the beginning of a fulfilling new chapter.

A Day in the Life

Each morning, Trevor checks his PDA to see what the day holds—whether it’s routine maintenance or urgent reactive repairs. With his van ready at home, he heads out to client sites, often working solo but never feeling isolated.

“We’re always chatting with each other,” he says. “Whether it’s for advice, information, or just a bit of gossip, there’s a real sense of camaraderie.”

Since joining Mitie in 2014, Trevor has embraced continuous learning. He’s completed various training courses, both online and in person - including certifications in electrical work, plumbing, and operating mobile elevated work platforms. “There’s always something new to learn,” he says. “It keeps the job fresh and exciting.”

What Trevor enjoys most is solving problems and helping clients get back on track. “I love fixing leaks, repairing broken equipment, and getting shops trading safely again,” he shares. His work takes him to diverse sites like Lloyds Bank, Vodafone, and Sky, where he builds rapport with clients and manages expectations with professionalism and empathy.

As a multi-skilled engineer, no two days are the same. One day might involve plumbing, the next electrical work, and another might require painting or tiling. “It’s the variety that makes the job,” Trevor says. “You never get bored.”

Now 57, Trevor has no plans to slow down. “I enjoy being on the tools. The job keeps me young,” he laughs.
