From Retail Floors to Employment Law: Lee's Journey into Employee Relations
READ MOREFor over 14 years, Lee worked as a People Manager in retail operations but always had a keen interest in law, psychology and employee relations.
Joining Mitie around 14 months ago, Lee reflects on how his journey has been one of remarkable growth and a passion for making a difference.
A New Chapter with Mitie
Since joining Mitie, Lee’s career development has been swift and rewarding, recently being promoted into the role of Employee Relations Specialist. “I don’t think there’s a place like Mitie in terms of the experience and exposure you get,” he shares. Over the past year, he’s gained extensive experience in various cases, and he’s also begun completing a CIPD Level 5 apprenticeship. With six hours a week dedicated to off-the-job learning, Lee is pairing practical fieldwork with theoretical knowledge to further his expertise.
Lee emphasises that while employee relations experience is helpful, it’s not necessarily a must. He successfully transferred his skills and knowledge from his operational background into his new role, demonstrating how adaptable experiences can open doors to new opportunities.
For Lee, the inclusive culture within the ER team has been instrumental during his time at Mitie. Though cliche he notes that “everyone is on hand to support and help, whether you’re a new starter or been here for years. We’re always bouncing ideas of each other”.
Making a meaningful impact
One of the most rewarding aspects of his role? Seeing the development of managers and colleagues. “I see our role as enhancing and building the skill set of the managers we work with,” he shares. He takes pride in knowing that every manager he supports leaves with greater knowledge, confidence, and capability. Equally, he finds joy in mentoring new starters and watching them progress within the team.
